Job search sites commonly referred to as job boards or job search engines are web-based platforms that connect companies and job searchers. Employers use these platforms to advertise open positions that they are looking to fill, while job seekers browse employment possibilities on a matching website or through an app.
Companies and staffing agencies utilize job search sites to expand their hiring reach and attract a broader pool of highly qualified individuals. Job search sites may sell and host job postings on their sites, aggregate postings from other sources such as company career pages, or do both.

Running a Job Board in 2026: Pay-Range Laws, Scams and How to Set It Up
A job board looks like any other classifieds site, but job ads come with rules and risks that a site selling sofas does not have. Two changes since this post was first written matter most.
1. Salary ranges are becoming mandatory
In the United States, a growing number of states require pay information in job postings, including California, Colorado, Illinois, New York and Washington, as well as the District of Columbia (see SixFifty's state tracker, updated September 2026). Three more took effect in 2026: Virginia (1 July 2026, employers with at least one Virginia employee), Maine (29 July 2026, employers with 10 or more employees) and Connecticut (1 October 2026). Thresholds and details differ by state. In California, for example, employers with 15 or more employees must also give their pay ranges to the third parties, such as job boards, that post their ads.
In Europe, the new pay transparency rules began taking effect across the EU in June 2026. According to the European Commission (5 June 2026), employers must tell job seekers the starting salary or pay range in the vacancy notice or before the interview, and may no longer ask candidates about their pay history.
The legal duty is on the employer, but a job board makes compliance easier when its posting form has a salary field, and many job seekers now pass over ads that show no pay.
2. Job scams have grown sharply
The US Federal Trade Commission reported in March 2025 that reports of job and employment-agency scams tripled from 2020 to 2024. Reported losses rose from $90 million to $501 million over the same period. Fake job ads damage the board that hosts them, so check new ads before they go live, at least while the site is young.
A practical setup for a job board on Yclas
- Categories and locations: use job sectors as categories (IT, hospitality, healthcare) and cities or regions as locations, so candidates can filter by both.
- Custom fields: Yclas supports text, number, list, yes/no and date fields. Add salary minimum and maximum (numbers), contract type (list), remote work (yes/no) and closing date (date).
- Moderation: make new listings wait for your approval instead of publishing them straight away, and turn on the built-in spam protection (reCAPTCHA, Akismet, blocklists, blocked email domains).
- Expiry: set ads to expire after a fixed number of days so old vacancies disappear. If you allow it, employers can reactivate an expired listing from their account.
- Revenue: charge per posting with paid categories, sell featured listings that appear first, or offer monthly memberships to recruiters and agencies that post often.
- Candidates: job seekers can create accounts, save listings as favourites, get email alerts about new ones, and message employers through the site.
You can try this setup during the 15-day free trial at yclas.com/create-website.html. Plans start at $69/month; see pricing.
