Hi friends,
In this week’s blog post, I am going to share with you how to get your business noticed by using the most popular business directories.
In today’s world, it is of crucial importance, especially for startup businesses, to have a good website. Of course, starting your website is just the first step towards being heard. The website has to be a target for potential customers - it has to be found by your clients. This is why you must be listed on search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. However, this is not enough and you have to be listed on business directories as well. In this article, you can find the most popular US business directories which will help you to get your business noticed.
What is a business directory website?
Firstly, let’s clear out what is a business directory. This is a website or printed listing of information that lists businesses within niche-based categories. Business directories can be local or national. Different businesses can be categorized by niche, location, activity, or size. What they do is help you with SEO to get your website higher on search engines, for promotions, client reviews, and many more.
Advantages of using business directories
- The link you provide to the business directory helps you to get a higher ranking on Google, Yahoo, and other search engines.
- Regular visitors of the actual business directory could also visit your website as directories increase the probability of retrieving relevant results.
- Your business and company website will be connected with a physical address. This will help you when a potential customer searches for local businesses.
Where customers really look for local businesses in 2026
Directories still matter, but the places customers check have changed a lot since this post was written. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 (1,002 US adults, published February 11, 2026) found that 71% of consumers use Google to read local business reviews, down from 83% a year earlier. Apple Maps nearly doubled to 27%, from 14%. The biggest change is AI: 45% now use ChatGPT and other generative AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% the year before. That makes AI tools the third most used source, after Google and Facebook.
AI assistants and map apps draw on the same business data you publish in directories. So start with the free profiles at the top of the table below, and make sure your name, address, phone number, hours and website are the same everywhere.
| Directory | Cost to list | What changed / what to know (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Free | According to Google, creating a profile is free, and it is how you appear on Google Search and Google Maps. Still the most used source for local reviews. |
| Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Connect) | Free | Apple launched Apple Business on April 14, 2026 as a free service that replaces Apple Business Connect. Existing Business Connect data, including claimed locations and place cards, moved across automatically. You manage the place card that shows across Apple Maps, Safari, Spotlight and more here. Apple also announced ads in Apple Maps for the US and Canada from summer 2026. |
| Yelp | Free page; paid ads optional | Users had written 330 million reviews by the end of 2025, 22 million of them during 2025. Yelp had 496,000 paying advertising locations in Q4 2025, down 3% year over year (Yelp Q4 2025 earnings call, February 12, 2026). Home and local services now earn Yelp more ad revenue than restaurants and retail. |
| Thumbtack | Pay per lead | The credits system is gone. Pros pay per lead and are charged when they access a lead or are matched with a customer, whether or not the job is booked. Thumbtack takes no commission on the job itself. Housecall Pro reports pros paying from about $10 to over $100 per lead, depending on trade, job size and market. You can set a weekly spending limit, so decide on a budget before you start. |
| Foursquare | Free | The City Guide app closed on December 15, 2024 and the website on April 28, 2025. Your listing stays visible in the Swarm app and is passed on to Foursquare's data partners, so keep it accurate, but it is no longer a consumer directory. |
Reviews: what the FTC now forbids
Most directories run on reviews, and the rules for reviews in the US are stricter now. The FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, in effect since October 21, 2024, prohibits:
- writing, buying or selling fake reviews
- offering incentives only for reviews that express a particular sentiment
- using threats or false accusations to get negative reviews removed
- posting reviews by employees or insiders without a clear disclosure
Courts can impose civil penalties for knowing violations. The safe approach is simple: ask every customer for an honest review on Google, Apple Maps or Yelp, reply to negative reviews politely, and never pay for or filter feedback.
