Why guest checkout matters in 2026, and how to get the most from it
Making buyers register before they pay still costs sales. The Baymard Institute puts the average documented online cart abandonment rate at 70.22%, across 50 studies (list updated September 2025). Among shoppers who abandoned during checkout, 18% said the site wanted them to create an account. Baymard's guest checkout research found that 24% of US online shoppers had abandoned at least one order in the past quarter only because account creation was forced (4,384 respondents, 2022). It also found that 47% of sites fail to make guest checkout the most prominent option.
How guest checkout works on your Yclas site today
- When it appears: on any ad with a price and a Buy now button, once you have turned on one of the direct payment methods: PayPal seller payments, Stripe Connect, or Escrow Pay (Escrow.com). Without one of these, buyers have to contact the seller.
- What the buyer does: a visitor who isn't logged in goes straight to the guest checkout page. They can choose shipping or free pickup (if the seller allows pickup) and pay without registering first.
- What happens behind the scenes: the site creates the buyer's account from their email address and records the order. With PayPal and Stripe this happens once the payment is confirmed. With Escrow it happens when the buyer enters their email. The seller sees the sale in their panel like any other order.
- Stock: if you use stock control, a guest can only buy while the ad has stock left.
Checklist: remove the other reasons buyers leave
Guest checkout fixes only one of the reasons on Baymard's list. The biggest one is unexpected extra costs (shipping, taxes, fees), at 40% of checkout abandonments in the same study.
- Ask sellers to enter a shipping price, or enable pickup, so buyers see the full total on the ad and not only at the last step.
- If you charge VAT, set it up before you sell, so the price on the checkout page doesn't change unexpectedly.
- Give buyers more than one way to pay. Insufficient payment methods caused 9% of abandonments in Baymard's data. Offering PayPal alongside card payments through Stripe Connect lets buyers choose.
- For high-value items such as vehicles or equipment, Escrow Pay holds the money until the buyer confirms receipt. This helps with the 19% of abandonments Baymard links to distrust about card details.
- Keep Buy now easy to find on the ad page. Baymard's research is about making guest checkout prominent, and the same logic applies to the button that leads to it.
