What “free” really means on US marketplaces in 2026

Before you choose a site, it helps to know that “free to post” rarely means “free to sell”. The biggest US marketplaces charge in different ways, and some have changed their model since this list was first written. These are the rules on each platform's own fee pages as of October 2026:

PlatformPostingSelling fees and limits
CraigslistFree in most categories$5 for cars, trucks, RVs and motorcycles sold by owner in the US; $5 for any for-sale-by-dealer post; $10–75 for jobs; $5 for services; $5 for apartments in Boston, Chicago and NYC
Facebook MarketplaceFreeOn sales processed through Meta, individual sellers pay 10% per transaction, minimum $0.80. Seller Protection is US-only and covers items of $500 or less
eBayUp to 250 free listings a month, then $0.35 each13.6% final value fee on the first $7,500 in most categories, plus $0.30 (orders up to $10) or $0.40 per order
OfferUpFree, with optional paid promotionLocal pickup only: shipping was switched off for new listings on September 23, 2025 and removed from existing listings by October 21, 2025 (OfferUp Help; coverage)

Some names below are also no longer US options. When we checked in October 2026, olx.com listed communities only in countries such as Brazil, Poland, Portugal and Romania, with none in the US. Gumtree.com is the UK site, americanlisted.com redirected to a parked-domain page, and classtize.com is aimed at India.

Scams are the real cost of “free”

Open marketplaces attract fraud, and the numbers are growing. In testimony on March 25, 2026, the FTC said consumers filed 3 million fraud reports in 2025 and reported losing $15.9 billion, up from more than $12 billion in 2024. Its April 27, 2026 data spotlight found that shopping scams were the most reported kind of social media scam: more than 40% of people who lost money to a scam that started on social media reported a shopping scam. People lost more money to scams that started on Facebook than to scams on any other platform.

  • Meet locally and inspect first. Pay only once you have the item, and meet in a public, well-lit place.
  • Keep payment inside the platform when you ship. Protection such as Meta's Seller Protection only applies to transactions processed through Meta, and it is capped at $500.
  • Refuse gift cards, wire transfers and “overpayment” checks, and never share verification codes sent to your phone.
  • Check that the site is still active. Look at the dates on the newest listings before you post your phone number or email.
