Ghana's online classifieds in 2026: consolidation, mobile money and how to trade safely
The list above dates from 2017, and Ghana's market has changed a lot since then. Several of the big names have been bought by rivals, payments have moved largely to mobile money, and the authorities now publish regular fraud figures that every buyer and seller should know.
Who owns what now
| Site in the list above | What happened |
|---|---|
| OLX Ghana | Bought by Jiji in April 2019; OLX users were redirected to Jiji (Nairametrics) |
| Tonaton | Bought by Jiji, announced 31 January 2022. Tonaton had been Jiji's main rival in Ghana (B&FT) |
| Cheki Ghana | Sold to Autochek in September 2020; outlets rebranded as Autochek (Techpoint Africa) |
| Jumia House | Bought by property portal meQasa; the deal was announced on 8 November 2017 (TechLabari) |
In practice, general classifieds in Ghana are now concentrated in Jiji, which also owns Tonaton. Jumia House's property business became part of meQasa, and job seekers still have specialist boards such as Jobberman. Two of the smaller sites in this list, Mobo Free and My Joy Market, did not load when we checked in October 2026.
Mobile money is how Ghana pays
The Bank of Ghana's 2025 Payment Systems Oversight Annual Report shows mobile money transactions grew 50.8% to GH¢4.54 trillion in 2025, up from GH¢3.01 trillion in 2024, with 491,057 active agents (The Ghana Report). Sending money also got cheaper: the 1% E-Levy on electronic transfers was abolished from midnight on 2 April 2025 (Graphic Online).
Fraud is rising, so trade carefully
Ghana's Cyber Security Authority (CSA) recorded 350 cyber fraud cases and GH₵4.4 million in losses in the first quarter of 2025, almost double the GH₵2.4 million lost in the same period of 2024. Fake online shops offering suspiciously low prices were a leading tactic (Graphic Online, March 2025). In May 2026 the CSA also warned of fake business listings on search engines and online maps that trick victims into giving their mobile money PINs. It counted 54 cases and GH¢266,195 in losses (MyJoyOnline). The CSA's advice that applies to classifieds users:
- Never share a mobile money PIN, one-time password or banking details. No genuine buyer or seller needs them.
- Be wary of new profiles with few reviews and of prices far below the market.
- Confirm payment requests directly with the person or business before you act on them.
- Report incidents to the CSA by calling or texting 292, or on WhatsApp at 0501603111.
One more rule of thumb for classifieds deals: where you can, meet in a public place, inspect the item, and only then pay.
