Selling in the US in 2026: what each platform really costs

"Free" classifieds are rarer than they used to be. Most big platforms are free for local, in-person deals but charge once a sale is shipped or once you list in a high-value category. Two of the largest US marketplaces, Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp, aren't in our original list at all. Facebook Marketplace alone had 1.1 billion users in 70 countries (CNBC, March 2025). Here is what selling costs today, from each platform's own fee pages where available.

PlatformLocal, in-person saleShipped sale or paid listing
CraigslistFree for most items$5 per post for cars/trucks/RVs/motorcycles by owner, anything by dealers, and services; $10-75 for jobs
Facebook MarketplaceFree10% selling fee (minimum $0.80) on shipped orders since 15 April 2024
OfferUpFreeNo shipping: new listings have been local-pickup only since 23 Sept 2025, and shipping was removed from existing listings on 21 Oct 2025 (report)
eBaySame fees apply250 free listings a month, then $0.35 each; 13.6% final value fee on most categories (on the total including shipping and tax, up to $7,500) plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 for orders of $10 or less)
MercariShipping-focused10% selling fee on item price plus buyer-paid shipping; the buyer pays a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee; no payment processing fee (since 6 Jan 2025)

A quick rule of thumb: for bulky items, furniture and cars, sell locally on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp or Craigslist, where it's free or $5. For small items that ship easily and attract collectors, eBay and Mercari reach national buyers, but budget 10-15% of the sale for fees. For jobs and services, Craigslist's paid categories still draw high-intent local traffic.

Taxes: the 1099-K threshold is back at $20,000

Payment platforms must send you (and the IRS) a Form 1099-K only when you receive more than $20,000 across more than 200 transactions in a year (IRS). This followed the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which cancelled the planned drop to $600 (Kahn Litwin, December 2025). Not getting a form doesn't make income tax-free: personal items sold at a gain are still reportable. Local cash deals on Craigslist or Marketplace never produce a 1099-K at all.
