Let’s check out the most popular general classified sites in Australia and some useful information about them. Here’s the list:
Gumtree
Locanto
Craigslist
Icracker
Tradingpost
Adeexaustralia
Aufreeads
Which of these sites still work in 2026?
A lot has changed since this list was first published in January 2023. In October 2026 we opened every site on the list and checked it against Similarweb's traffic rankings for September 2026. Gumtree and Locanto are clear leaders, Craigslist and Tradingpost are still running, and three of the seven no longer work as classifieds sites.
| Site | Status (checked October 2026) | Similarweb rank, September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Gumtree | Live. Owned by Gumtree Australia Markets Ltd (ASX: GUM) | #1 in Classifieds in Australia, #91 of all sites in Australia; about 95% of visitors are Australian |
| Locanto | Live | #2 in Classifieds in Australia, #115 of all sites; about 92% of visitors are Australian |
| Tradingpost | Live, online only since the print edition stopped in 2009 | #9 in Classifieds in Australia, #7,708 of all sites |
| Craigslist Sydney | Live | Not ranked separately (Similarweb measures craigslist.org as a whole) |
| Icracker | Offline: the icracker.com.au domain no longer resolves | – |
| Adeex Australia | Redirects to a parked-domain page | A few hundred visits recorded in September 2026 |
| Aufreeads | Not working: the site shows a 'website has been stopped' notice or a static archived copy of its old homepage. You can't post there | No data |
The Tradingpost history comes from Wikipedia's Trading Post article.
Gumtree has changed owners twice
Gumtree is still the market leader, but eBay no longer runs it. According to Wikipedia, eBay sold Gumtree Australia to Adevinta in 2021, together with CarsGuide and Autotrader, and in 2022 Adevinta sold all three to The Market Herald, a Perth-based listed company. The company's ASX announcement of 31 January 2025 says it would trade as Gumtree Australia Markets Limited under the ticker GUM from about 3 February 2025. The biggest general marketplace and two well-known car sites now belong to the same Australian-listed group.
How to tell whether a classifieds site is still real
Small free classifieds sites often close without notice, and when a domain registration lapses, someone else can buy the name. Before you post an ad or give out your email address or phone number, check these points:
- Look at the newest listings. If the most recent ads are months old, or the categories are empty, buyers have left the site too.
- Check that the page matches the brand. A parked page, a hosting error, a redirect to an unrelated site or content in another language means the original business is gone.
- Use the site's own messaging where you can. It means you don't have to publish your phone number, which cuts down on spam calls.
- Use more than one site. Gumtree and Locanto get most of the general classifieds traffic, so posting on both reaches far more buyers than any of the smaller sites.
