Looking for a classified ad site in Australia? For general second-hand goods, Gumtree is the largest dedicated classifieds site and basic ads are free, with Facebook Marketplace (free) and Locanto (free, with paid upgrades) as the main alternatives. For cars, most private sellers use Carsales; for jobs, SEEK; for property, realestate.com.au and Domain; and for local services, Airtasker and Gumtree's services section. Below is the full list, what each site is for and what posting costs, checked in October 2026.

One honest note on "free classified sites in Australia without registration": all the main sites ask you to create an account, or at least confirm an email address or phone number, before your ad goes live. The small "no sign-up" sites from older lists, including one that used to be in this post, are mostly gone.

Free classifieds in Australia: general sites

Brown and white concrete house

Gumtree

gumtree.com.au connects buyers and sellers in the local community across hundreds of categories, from furniture and baby gear to cars, rentals and services for hire. A basic ad is free; you can pay to promote it so it shows higher or stands out. In some categories (such as cars, real estate, jobs and services) extra ads at the same time may need a paid package, so check the price shown when you post. It has iOS and Android apps.

Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is now where a large share of Australian second-hand sales happen. Listing is free and buyers message you through Messenger. You need a Facebook account, and many of the scams below start here.

Locanto

Locanto is an international classifieds site with Australian city sections for buy and sell, cars, property, jobs, services and community ads. Posting is free in most categories, with paid Premium ads that rank higher and carry a badge. Its audience is much smaller than Gumtree's, so it works best as a second place to post.

Carsales

If you are selling a car, carsales.com.au is where most buyers look. Private ads are paid: a one-off fee, with several packages priced on your car, and the ad stays up until the car is sold. Carsales also offers a free Instant Offer for some cars if you would rather sell quickly at a wholesale price.

Classified ads for local services in Australia

Airtasker

Airtasker works the other way round from a classified ad: you post the job (cleaning, removals, assembly, gardening, handyman work) for free, and local Taskers send you offers. A connection fee is added when you assign the task, unless you pay for a yearly membership. If you offer a service yourself, Airtasker, Gumtree's "Services for Hire" section and Locanto are the usual places to advertise it.

Australia's classifieds market in 2026: who has the audience

A lot has changed since this list was first written. The big portals have changed owners, the small "no sign-up" site that used to be on this list no longer loads, and Facebook Marketplace now competes for every second-hand sale. The latest published figures show who actually has the buyers.

SiteLatest dataWhat changed
Gumtree#1 classifieds site in Australia and #91 site overall (Similarweb, Sept 2026). About 4 million unique monthly users across Gumtree, Carsguide and AutotraderRun by ASX-listed Gumtree Australia Markets. FY26 revenue of A$69.6m (down 7%), back to pre-tax profit (results, Aug 2026)
realestate.com.au146.4 million average monthly visits in FY26, up 11%, with 6.3 million exclusive usersBuy listings were flat over the year, so growth came from pricing (REA FY26, Aug 2026)
Domain7.7 million visitors in June 2026, by Domain's own countTaken over by US group CoStar on 27 August 2025 (RISMedia). REA and Domain are in Federal Court over each other's marketing claims
SEEKAustralian paid job ad volumes down 2% in FY26. Advanced and Premium ads rose from 15% to 27% of paid ads in ANZRevenue growth now comes from employers choosing higher-priced ad tiers with AI features, not from more ads (SEEK FY26 results)

In practice: for property, the realestate.com.au vs Domain duopoly is now a contest with a well-funded US owner on one side, so expect more aggressive pricing for agents. For general goods, Gumtree remains the largest dedicated classifieds site, and most private sellers also cross-post to Facebook Marketplace.

How to buy and sell safely on Australian classified sites

Scamwatch received more than 19,000 reports of shopping scams in 2025, with $8.6 million in losses, 19% more than the same period a year earlier. Fake marketplace listings are counted in this category (ABC News, 30 Dec 2025). The tactics to watch for:

  • PayID scams: a "buyer" or "seller" asks you to set up or upgrade PayID, often with a fee, before money can change hands. Treat any such request as a red flag.
  • Overpayment and fake screenshots: scammers send a fake payment confirmation, claim they overpaid and ask for a refund. Never release an item until the money is visible in your own bank account.
  • Upfront payment for items you can't see: inspect in person, or ask for extra photos, a video or receipts. Pay with methods that offer disputes (PayPal, credit card, BPAY), not bank transfer, crypto or gift cards.
  • Meet safely: choose public, well-lit places with CCTV, and consider bringing someone along. Victoria Police has set up 35 "safer exchange" sites across the state.
  • Keep the chat on the site: a buyer who wants to move straight to WhatsApp or email, or sends you a "courier" link to click, is usually not a real buyer.

If something goes wrong, call your bank straight away, then report it to Scamwatch and the police.

Stay-safe tips page for buyers and sellers

Publish this as your safety page and link it from every listing and message screen; add your own payment and reporting details.

BUY AND SELL SAFELY ON [SITE NAME] Most people on [Site name] are genuine. These simple habits protect you from the few who are not. MEETING IN PERSON: - Meet in a busy public place in daylight, such as a shopping centre or outside a police station. [Add local safe-trade spots if you have them.] - Tell a friend where you are going, or bring someone with you. - For large items at a home, do not go alone, and keep valuables out of sight when buyers visit yours. - Check the item fully before you pay. Test electronics, and check that serial numbers match any paperwork. - For vehicles, see the registration documents and check the item is not reported stolen or under finance where your country allows. PAYING AND GETTING PAID: - Best for in-person deals: pay or get paid on the spot, once you have seen the item. - [If your site has payments:] Pay through [Site name]'s checkout. Your money is held until you confirm you received the item. Payments made outside the site are not covered. - Never pay in advance by gift cards, wire transfer, money transfer services or crypto to someone you have not met. - Sellers: do not hand over an item until the money is in your account. A screenshot or an email "confirming payment" is not proof. - Be careful with cash for large amounts; consider a bank transfer you can see arrive before handing over. SIGNS OF A SCAM: - A price far below what the item usually sells for. - The other person cannot meet, is "abroad" or wants to use a courier you have never heard of. - They send you to a payment link or website that is not [Site name]. - They overpay and ask you to send back the difference. - They ask for codes sent to your phone, your passwords or ID photos. - They push you to decide quickly or move the chat off the site. PROTECT YOUR DETAILS: - Keep chats inside [Site name] messages until you are ready to meet. - Never share your account password or verification codes. [Site name] will never ask for them. IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG: - Stop contact and do not send more money. - Report the listing or user with the "Report" link, or write to [contact email]. - If you lost money or feel unsafe, contact your bank and the local police. Other Australian classifieds sites, and the ones that closed

Older lists of Australian classifieds sites name many more places to post. We checked them on 28 October 2026. A few still work, but none comes close to Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace or Locanto for buyers:

Before you post on a small site, look at the newest ads in your city and category. If the latest one is weeks old, buyers aren't there either.

How we checked these sites

For each site we checked, in October 2026, that it still operates in Australia, its current address, what it is for, what posting costs and whether it has an app, using the sites' own pages and help centres where they could be reached, and company results or well-known sources for the figures. Paid ad prices change often, so we describe how each site charges rather than quoting amounts. We removed Australia Free Classified Ads (aufreeads.com), which no longer loads, and added Facebook Marketplace, Carsales and Airtasker. This page also replaces our two older lists of Australian classifieds sites.
