Facebook Marketplace alternative

A Facebook Marketplace alternative your community owns.

This page is for people who run a buy and sell group on Facebook, for a neighbourhood, a school, a club or a hobby, and wonder whether it should have a place of its own. A group costs nothing and your members are already there. What it doesn't give you is control: Facebook's rules decide what can be sold, its feed decides who sees each post, and the group can be disabled. Here are the options.

Why owners look elsewhere

What sends people looking for a Facebook groups alternative.

The group can be removedMeta removes groups that repeatedly break its rules, and a post an admin or moderator approves counts against the group. Admins have 30 days to appeal. [1]
Facebook's list of what can't be soldIts Commerce Policies apply to any buying, selling or trading, even of free items: animals, alcohol, raffles, digital products and most services are restricted. [2]
The feed decides who sees a postPosts from groups are selected and ranked by an AI system, so a listing can scroll away before the right buyer sees it. [3]
A fee on checkoutIn the US, a sale paid through Facebook checkout costs the seller 10%, with a minimum of $0.80. [4]
The options

Bringing your group across

You don't have to close the group: many keep it and post a link to the new site.

  1. Start a free trial and tell the sign-up wizard what your group trades; the AI sets up the categories.
  2. Copy recent posts from the group and paste them in Move your site to Yclas: the AI turns them into listings, and a dry run shows them before anything is saved.
  3. Pin a post in the group with the link, and invite members to post their next listing on the site.

Members create their own accounts; you can keep the site to signed-in members only. Listings stay until they sell or expire, members save searches and get alerts for new matches, and you set the rules for what can be sold.

When to stay with Facebook groups

  • Your group is small and trades now and then: a free group is enough.
  • What your members sell is allowed by Facebook's Commerce Policies, and reach on Facebook matters more to you than control.
  • No one in the group wants to look after a site, even a hosted one.

Can I make my own Facebook Marketplace?

Yes: a classifieds site of your own, with your name, your domain and your rules. On Yclas it is hosted for you and live in about two minutes; plans start at $19 a month for 3 months, then $69 a month, after a 15-day free trial.

Do I have to close the Facebook group?

No. Many groups keep it for news and chat and post links to the site, where listings can be searched and don't scroll away.

Can members sell animals or services on our own site?

Yes, if your rules allow it: on your own site you decide what can be sold, within the law. Facebook's Commerce Policies restrict animals, alcohol, raffles and most services.

Can I keep the site for members only?

Yes. You can make the site private, so only signed-in members see the listings, and check new listings before they go live.
