Most classifieds sites look free, and for a private seller with a sofa to sell they usually are. The money comes from somewhere else: from car dealers, estate agents and employers who pay a monthly subscription, from sellers who pay to move their ad back to the top, and more and more from buyers, who now pay a fee for protection and shipping on sites that used to leave the sale to the two sides. In 2025 and 2026 that mix changed faster than it had in years. General sites started charging buyers, resale apps dropped their seller fees, and the big car, property and job portals raised what businesses pay while the number of businesses paying barely moved.
This is our first yearly State of Classifieds Pricing report, the third in the series after State of Classifieds 2026 and State of Marketplaces 2026. Those two say who leads in each country; this one says what the leaders charge. It starts with the ten pricing changes of the year and how each business model makes money, with the published numbers of the listed groups. It then goes through general classifieds and second-hand sites, car sites, property portals, job boards, and niche marketplaces and services, with a price table for each: what a private seller pays for a basic ad, what paid visibility costs, what businesses pay, and the fees on a sale. Each part ends with lessons for smaller sites, and the report ends with advice on setting your own prices. The price tables are also a free download (CSV).
The short version
- Businesses pay, and they pay more each year. Rightmove's average agent paid £1,621 a month in 2025, up 6%, while the number of advertisers rose 1%1. Private sellers paid Auto Trader £23.6 million of its £624.3 million revenue, under 4%2.
- Buyers now pay on second-hand sites. Vinted charges sellers nothing and grew revenue 38% to about €1.1 billion in 2025 from a fee the buyer pays3. Trade Me dropped its 7.9% success fee for casual sellers in March 2026 and now charges buyers NZ$0.99 to NZ$4.99 instead4.
- Job boards charge more for fewer ads. SEEK's job ad yield in Australia and New Zealand rose 14% in the year to June 2026 while paid ad volume fell 1%5, and Indeed's US revenue per job posting rose 17%6.
- Ads lift what marketplaces keep. Etsy's headline fees barely changed, but its take rate rose to 24.2% in 2025 from 22.3%, mainly because sellers bought more on-site ads7.
- Free is still the norm for private sellers. Craigslist is free in most categories and charges only for jobs ($10 to $75) and dealer cars ($5)8, and Kleinanzeigen lets a private seller post two car ads free in any 30 days for cars under €30,0009.

How we built this report
We read the prices on the sites' own price, fee and help pages in November 2026, and took business economics (average revenue per advertiser, yields, take rates) from company results and stock exchange filings. Where a site's own page refused automated access, we used a dated report from the national or trade press and marked the price "reported". Where we could not confirm a price at all, we left it out or put a dash in the table rather than guess. Every source in this report was opened and checked in November 2026. The sources are numbered in the text and listed at the end.
Four notes on the numbers:
- Prices change often. Many sites set prices by category and region, and some show the price only at checkout. Treat the prices here as the published price in November 2026, in the local currency as the site shows it.
- ARPA (average revenue per advertiser) is what the average paying business pays the site, usually per month. Car portals call it ARPR (per retailer) or ARPD (per dealer); job boards talk about yield (revenue per paid job ad).
- Take rate is the share of each sale the platform keeps as revenue, from all its fees and ads. Where we worked a take rate out ourselves, by dividing revenue by the value of goods sold, the text says so.
- Worked examples are ours. They use the prices in the text and leave out taxes unless they say otherwise.

Ten pricing changes of 2025-2026
Two things happened at once in 2025-2026. Free general sites started charging the buyer when goods are paid for and shipped through the site. Vertical portals for cars, property and jobs kept raising what they charge dealers, agents and employers, even when the number of listings stayed flat. Below are the ten changes we found best supported by company results, filings and dated press. Site-by-site prices are in the category sections that follow.
1. Buyers pay for shipping and protection
The general sites still let private sellers list for free. The new money comes from the buyer, who pays a fee when the item is paid for and shipped through the site. On Kleinanzeigen in Germany, "Sicher bezahlen" (pay safely) is free for the seller. The buyer pays a small fee that depends on the price10. Marktplaats makes buyer protection compulsory on "Direct kopen" (buy now)11. Site-by-site fees are in General classifieds below.
The shift shows in the numbers. In Vend's second-hand goods business, transactional revenue grew 23% in the fourth quarter of 2025 while advertising revenue there fell 19%12. Avito says the volume of goods bought with delivery grew 30% in 202513. It costs money to win these sales. Vend's second-hand unit lost NOK 43 million in the third quarter of 2026 while it paid for shipping discounts14.
2. Buyer fees replace seller fees
Vinted showed that the buyer can pay instead of the seller. Sellers pay nothing. The buyer pays a protection fee at checkout (see Niche marketplaces below). On that model Vinted grew revenue 38% to about €1.1 billion in 2025, on €10.8 billion of business volume (up 47%)3.
eBay copied it in the UK. It removed selling fees for private sellers in most categories. In February 2025 it began charging buyers a "Buyer Protection Fee" on private sellers' items. From July 17, 2025 that fee is up to £0.10 per item, plus 7% of the price up to £20, 4% from £20 to £300 and 2% from £300 to £4,00015. In our worked example, a buyer of a £50 item pays £0.10 + £1.40 + £1.20 = £2.70. The same source reports that eBay's UK net revenue fell to $331 million in the first quarter of 2025, from $390 million a year earlier.
Not every switch worked. Mercari US removed seller fees in 2024 and charged buyers instead. Users complained, and in January 2025 it went back to splitting fees between buyers and sellers. US GMV (gross merchandise value, the value of goods sold) was $810 million in the year to June 2026, still about 20% below fiscal 202316. Poshmark announced in October 2024 that it would replace its flat 20% seller commission with 5.99% plus $1 to $3 per order17. It went back to 20% about two weeks later, after its chief executive admitted sales had fallen18.
3. Casual sellers pay less, businesses more
Facebook Marketplace charges nothing for a local sale, and that keeps pushing private-seller fees down. Trade Me, New Zealand's main marketplace, dropped its success fee for casual sellers in March 2026. Before, sellers usually paid 7.9% of the final price. Buyers now pay a service fee of NZ$0.99 to NZ$4.99 on items over NZ$20, and sellers paid through Ping, Trade Me's payment service, pay a 2.19% fee. Trade Me said fees were becoming a barrier to selling. A Massey University academic said Facebook was "snapping at their heels"4.
The fees moved to businesses and to buyers. Craigslist is still free in most categories. It charges per post where professionals post, such as jobs ($10 to $75 depending on the city) and dealer posts ($5)8. eBay Germany charges business sellers 11-14% in most categories plus €0.35 to €0.45 per order, while private sellers are on a separate fee schedule19. The rule across these sites is now the same: casual sellers list free, and businesses pay.
4. Rightmove leans on new products
Rightmove is the cleanest case of a portal that grows by charging each agent more. ARPA (average revenue per advertiser per month) was £1,621 in 2025, up £97 or 6%. Agency ARPA was £1,530 and New Homes ARPA £2,135. The number of advertisers rose only 1%, to 19,272. Revenue grew 9% to £425.1 million, at a 70% underlying operating margin1.
For 2026, Rightmove guided to a further £110-120 rise in ARPA and 8-10% revenue growth. It also guided to a slower 3-5% rise in underlying operating profit20. Trade press summed up the result as growth moving away from price rises on the core agency product21. For a portal whose agents are already paying more each year, more of the next increase has to come from new products rather than from the base package.
Our calculation of 19,272 advertisers times £1,621 times 12 gives about £375 million. That is close to 90% of the group's revenue, so nearly all of it comes from agents' and developers' monthly fees.
5. REA raises prices, Domain caps them
REA Group, owner of realestate.com.au, shows how far a dominant portal can push price when volume stalls. In the year to June 2026, national buy listings were flat, yet residential revenue rose 12% to A$1,290 million. The driver was a 13% rise in buy yield (revenue per listing). Premiere+, its top listing product, rose 7% on average, and add-ons and depth products (bigger, higher-placed ads) also grew. For the year to June 2027 REA has announced an 8% Premiere+ rise. It expects low double-digit yield growth even with flat or lower listings22. In Australia the home seller often pays for the listing through the agent, so much of the rise falls on households.
Domain, the number two, chose the opposite strategy after CoStar bought it in August 202523. From July 2026 it capped yearly price rises for agents and vendors at 4%. It also added free 3D tours and drone photos to its premium packages24. In July 2026 Domain also sued REA in the Federal Court over its "9 in 10 properties" advertising claim, and REA counterclaimed22. This is the first real price competition between Australian property portals in years. It mirrors CoStar's US plan: Homes.com charges agents for advertising instead of selling them buyer leads25.
6. Car portals raise dealer prices
Auto Trader sets UK dealers' prices once a year, at its yearly April pricing and product event. In the year to March 2026, ARPR (average revenue per retailer per month) rose 5% to £2,995, from £2,854. The average number of retailer forecourts fell 0.5% to 13,942, and was 1.7% lower in the second half. Group revenue grew 4% to £624.3 million, but growth slowed to 3% in the second half, and Autotrader revenue was flat in April 2026. Auto Trader blamed tougher trading and dealer pushback against the speed and design of the rollout of Deal Builder, its tool that lets buyers start a car deal online; some dealers cut the number of cars they advertised from November 2025. For the current year it expects price to add £85-95 to ARPR and new products £65-75, while the stock lever takes away £30-4026. In our worked example, the average dealer pays about £35,900 a year. In Germany, AutoScout24 replaced its dealer tariffs with three packages (Go, Smart and Pro) from October 2024; Smart doubles a dealer's visibility. It does not publish the prices27.
The US shows how differently two car portals can fare. CarGurus grew revenue 14% to $907.0 million in 202528. Its US QARSD (quarterly average revenue per subscribing dealer) was $7,938 in the fourth quarter, up 8%, across 26,049 paying dealers28. Cars.com grew 1% to $723.2 million. Its ARPD (average revenue per dealer per month) was $2,472 in the fourth quarter, flat on a year earlier ($2,475), while its dealer count grew 2% to 19,544. It repackaged its marketplace and website products29. CarGurus raised what each dealer pays; Cars.com held it flat.
7. Job boards sell depth
Job boards had a weak hiring market in 2025-2026, and the leaders answered with more expensive ad tiers, not more ads. SEEK is the clearest example. In the year to June 2026, its ANZ (Australia and New Zealand) revenue rose 12% and job ad yield (revenue per ad) rose 14%, while paid ad volume fell 1%5. SEEK put that down to more employers buying depth after it launched upgraded ad tiers, including a new "Advanced" ad between Basic and Premium in January-June 2025, plus value-based pricing and inflation-linked price rises. It now aims to grow yield by at least 10% a year30.
The same pattern runs through property and cars: fewer listings, each one charged more. A paid job ad on SEEK is sold one at a time. The employer picks a tier, and the higher tiers place the ad above others for longer. This is "paid visibility" sold to employers. India's Info Edge, owner of Naukri, earned about ₹581 crore from recruitment in January-March 202631. For the year to March 2026, its standalone recruitment revenue rose 14% to ₹2,256 crore, and billings 10% to ₹2,374 crore; all standalone revenue rose 15% to ₹3,052 crore32. Indeed and LinkedIn, which charge per click or per application, are covered in Job boards below.
8. Private users pay subscriptions
Charging private people a monthly fee sounds hard, but Scout24 does it at scale. On ImmoScout24, private users such as home seekers and owners can buy "Plus" subscriptions. In 2025, private subscription revenue grew 18.8% to €107.2 million. The average number of private-segment customers rose 14.0% to 506,937. Our calculation gives about €17.60 per customer per month. The professional side (agents and developers) is still bigger. Its subscription revenue rose 15.4% to €342.3 million, and professional ARPU (average revenue per user) rose 9.5%. Group revenue grew 14.7% to €649.6 million, or 11.0% without acquisitions33.
This is freemium (free basic use, paid extras) aimed at the side of the market that usually pays nothing. It works where demand is far higher than supply, as in the rental markets of large German cities, so that seekers will pay for an edge. Private subscriptions now bring about one sixth of Scout24's revenue (our calculation, €107.2 million out of €649.6 million); the whole private segment, including pay-per-ad listings, made €179.0 million. Few other portals publish a comparable figure. Smaller sites cannot copy this easily. It needs a market where the buyer side is under pressure and the listings are scarce.
9. Ads lift take rates
On transactional marketplaces, the headline commission barely moved in 2025, but the share of each sale the platform keeps rose. This share is the "take rate". The extra money came from sellers buying ads to rank higher in the site's own search. Etsy's take rate rose to 24.2% in 2025 from 22.3%, mainly because of on-site ads7. That is far above its headline 6.5% transaction fee34.
Allegro shows the same thing in Poland. Its Polish revenue grew 17.4% in 2025, nearly twice as fast as Polish GMV (9.4%). Advertising, its delivery network and Allegro Pay credit helped, and Allegro Pay financed more than 15% of GMV35. In the first half of 2026, Polish revenue of 5.99 billion zł was about 17% of Polish GMV of 35.0 billion zł (our calculation); second-quarter Polish revenue rose 14.4% to 3.17 billion zł36. On eBay, revenue was about 14% of 2025 GMV (our calculation, $11.1 billion on $79.6 billion)37.
10. Regulators look at platforms
Regulators acted on platforms in 2025-2026, mostly through safety, tax and competition rules rather than price caps. In May 2026 the European Commission fined Temu €200 million under the Digital Services Act. It was only the second fine under the law, which allows up to 6% of global turnover38. From July 1, 2026, the EU charges a €3 customs duty on low-value parcels from outside the EU39.
Price display rules also tightened. In the UK, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act bans "drip pricing" for practices from April 6, 2025: a site may not show a headline price and then add compulsory charges during checkout40. A buyer-protection or service fee that every buyer must pay therefore has to be in the price shown up front. In the US, the FTC's fee rule took effect on May 12, 2025, but it covers only live-event tickets and short-term lodging, not marketplaces in general41.
Competition authorities also looked at marketplaces. Norway's authority searched the offices of Nettbil, a car-selling service in the Vend group, in January 202642. Mexico's Cofece closed its marketplace study in September 2025 without remedies, because its commissioners could not agree43. One regulator did change portal pricing directly. South Africa's Competition Commission ordered Property24 and Private Property to stop charging for incoming listings and to offer cheaper packages for small agents and dealers44. It also told the portals to offer packages for agents with few leads and for dealers with fewer than 20 listings, priced within 15% of what other customers pay per listing. That order dates from 2023, but it is still the model for capping portal prices.
How classifieds sites and marketplaces make money
Listed groups publish enough to compare how each one earns its money. The vertical portals (cars, property, jobs) earn most of it from professional subscriptions and paid placement. They report ARPA, ARPR or yield, the average a business or listing pays. The transactional marketplaces earn a share of each sale and report GMV, so we can work out a take rate (revenue divided by GMV, marked "our calculation"). Private groups such as Adevinta, Avito and Craigslist publish little. For those, the table gives the latest reported or estimated figure. For who leads in each country, see State of Classifieds 2026, and for marketplace seller fees, State of Marketplaces 2026.

Listing fees
Paying just to publish an ad is now rare for private sellers on general sites. It survives in three places. The first is categories where the seller is usually a business, such as Craigslist's paid job, dealer and services posts (see change 3). The second is high-value private sales, such as homes on realestate.com.au, where the seller pays for a listing package through the agent. Sweden's Hemnet is the clearest case: home sellers pay per listing, and its average revenue per published listing (ARPL) rose 28.1% to SEK 8,175 in 2025 while the number of listings fell 13.3%, mostly because sellers upgraded to its Premium and Max packages. From February 2026, starting in Stockholm, it also offers a "sell first, pay later" option57. The third is marketplaces with very large catalogs, such as Etsy's $0.20 per listing34.
Job boards are the exception: their core product is still a fee for each ad (change 7). Few groups report listing fees as a separate line. On Etsy, transaction fees and ads matter far more than the $0.20. Craigslist, where paid posts are the whole business and revenue has shrunk since 2018 (see General classifieds below), shows the risk of a model built on a few paid categories once rivals offer them free. The lesson from the reporting groups is that a listing fee works when the lister is a business or the item is worth thousands. For a used chair, it mostly drives the listing to Facebook.
Paid visibility
Paid visibility means the lister pays to be seen more. Common forms are a bump (paying to move an ad back to the top), a top ad pinned above the results, a highlighted or bigger ad, or a higher tier. It is the main way general classifieds earn from private sellers (see General classifieds below).
On the vertical portals it is called "depth", and it drove the yield gains at REA and SEEK (changes 5 and 7). Australian dealer revenue at carsales grew 10% in the half to December 2025 on more leads and premium products48.
On marketplaces, paid visibility takes the form of sponsored search results, as at Etsy (change 9). Paid visibility works best when the site is crowded. When volumes fall, as in Australian property and jobs in 2025-2026, each lister has more reason to pay to stand out, so yield rises even as listings fall.
Business subscriptions
The monthly package for dealers, agents and employers is the biggest money-maker in classifieds. It brings in most of the revenue at the most profitable groups. At Rightmove, subscriptions bring in close to 90% of revenue (change 4). At Auto Trader, 13,942 forecourts paying an average £2,995 a month comes to about £500 million; reported retailer revenue was £501.1 million, about 80% of group revenue26. Scout24's professional subscriptions were €342.3 million, 53% of group revenue (our calculation)33.
In the US, 19,544 Cars.com dealers at the fourth-quarter ARPD of $2,472 a month come to about $580 million a year, about 80% of revenue (our rough calculation); reported dealer revenue, which also counts websites and other dealer products, was $644.1 million29. CarGurus' US QARSD of $7,938 per quarter works out to about $2,650 a month (our calculation)28.
These portals rarely publish list prices. They set them in yearly price events and sell bundles, and they report the result as ARPA. That is why the table shows averages, not rate cards.
Pay per lead and pay per click
In pay per lead, the business pays for each enquiry, call or applicant instead of a flat monthly fee. Pay per click is the same idea, charged for each click. The largest example in classifieds is Zillow's Premier Agent, which sells US agents buyer leads. Residential revenue, mostly Premier Agent, rose 7% to $1,704 million, 66% of Zillow's $2,583 million total46. How Zillow prices those leads is in Property portals below.
CoStar positions Homes.com against this model: it charges agents for advertising instead of selling buyer leads (change 5; details in Property portals below). Lead volumes also matter on subscription sites. carsales tied its dealer growth partly to more leads48.
Pay per click and pay per applicant are most common in jobs, through aggregators such as Indeed; Job boards below covers their prices. The appeal is clear: the business pays only for results. The risk is just as clear. The site's revenue swings with the market and with lead quality disputes, as Zillow's shift to paying at closing shows.
Transaction fees
This is the fastest-growing model in general classifieds and the main one on resale marketplaces. The platform takes part in the sale and earns a percentage from the seller, the buyer or both. The headline rates for 2026 vary widely, from nothing for private sellers on Vinted (change 2) to 10% at Mercari Japan60. Site-by-site rates are in Niche marketplaces below.
What the platform actually keeps is higher than the headline. By our calculation it was about 10% of GMV at Vinted and about 14% at eBay, and Etsy reports 24.2% (see the table). Revenue at transactional sites grows with GMV, so Vinted's revenue rose 38% while Vend's ad-based business shrank12. Carousell went further. It moved from plain classifieds to managed resale, with integrated shipping, certified programs for higher-value goods and showrooms where buyers can inspect items. Revenue rose 18% to about $140 million in 2025, and it reached positive EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization)61.
Take rate: revenue as a share of the value of goods or services sold. "Our calculation" where we divided revenue by GMV; the others are the company's own figure. Sources are in the text.

| Marketplace | Take rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| The RealReal | 32.5% | Luxury consignment, our calculation |
| Fiverr | 27.7% | Freelance, fourth quarter |
| Etsy | 24.2% | Handmade and vintage, up from 22.3% |
| Upwork | 19% | Freelance, fourth quarter |
| Allegro | 17% | Poland, first half of 2026, our calculation |
| eBay | 14% | Our calculation |
| Vinted | 10% | Sellers pay nothing; our calculation |
The cost side is heavy. Shipping subsidies, fraud refunds and payment processing come first, as Vend's losses show (change 1). Fees also annoy users who are used to free deals, as Mercari US found (change 2).
Display advertising
Display advertising means banners and sponsored content sold to brands. On most classifieds sites it is a second income, and it is shrinking at some, such as Vend's second-hand sites (change 1). At Cars.com, OEM and national advertising fell 1% in 2025 and 9% in the fourth quarter, as carmakers changed their spending in the second half29.
Others did better. Auto Trader's manufacturer and agency revenue grew 14% as carmakers advertised new and used cars to support their dealers26. Trader Interactive, CAR Group's US arm for trucks, RVs and boats, grew direct media revenue 62%47.
The one large site that lives mainly on advertising is Korea's Karrot. Its consolidated revenue rose 39% to KRW 170.3 billion in the first half of 2026, and it says advertising, mostly bought by local businesses next to free private listings, is its core revenue source; ad revenue rose 35% in the second quarter62. That works when a site has dense local traffic and a self-serve ad tool for small shops. On a smaller general site, banner networks pay little, and they slow the page.
Software and finance
The highest-margin new revenue comes from selling software, data and money services around the listing. Zillow's mortgage revenue rose 37% to $199 million46. Allegro Pay is covered in change 9. Vinted is moving users onto its own Vinted Pay wallet63.
Car portals sell software and finance to dealers. At Webmotors in Brazil, more than 11,600 dealers use the Wallet loyalty program, and Wallet revenue rose 30% in the year to June 2026; carsales had handled A$440 million of private-sale (C2C) payments since launch47. Finance revenue also helped CAR Group's Latin American growth48. Not all of these bets work. CarGurus wound down its CarOffer dealer-to-dealer wholesale business in 2025 and now reports it as discontinued operations28.
AI is starting to show up as revenue. Avito said its AI tools earned ₽670 million in 2024 and plans to spend ₽12 billion on generative AI over five years50. Few groups report these lines separately, but they are where portals look for growth once core prices stop rising.
What the numbers say
Businesses pay most of the money in classifieds. A UK car dealer pays Auto Trader about £3,000 a month and a UK agent pays Rightmove about £1,600. US dealers pay Cars.com and CarGurus roughly $2,500-2,650 a month each. At the most profitable portals, these subscriptions bring in about 80-90% of revenue (our calculations). Their prices rise by 5% or more a year: Auto Trader's ARPR rose 5%, Rightmove's ARPA 6%, Scout24's professional ARPU 9.5%, REA's buy yield 13%, SEEK's job ad yield 14% and Hemnet's revenue per listing 28%. Over the same period, listings or dealer counts were mostly flat or falling.

| REA Group | +13% | Residential buy yield, year to June 2026 |

Private sellers pay little or nothing to list. Where they do pay, it is a small fee on a high-value item: a car, a home, a job ad. Scout24 is the one group that gets real subscription money from private users, about €17.60 a month from half a million people.
On resale marketplaces the buyer increasingly pays: about 5% plus €0.70 on Vinted in Spain, €0.50 plus 4.5% on Kleinanzeigen, and up to 7% on eBay UK's sliding scale. What platforms keep, counting ads and services, runs from about 10% of GMV (Vinted) to 14% (eBay) and 24% (Etsy). The pattern holds across models. The money comes from whoever gets the most value from a sale and has the fewest other places to go.
General classifieds and second-hand sites
General classifieds sites still follow one old rule: a private seller posts an everyday item for free. The money comes from four other places. First, optional visibility products: a bump, a top ad, a highlight, or a homepage gallery slot. Second, caps on free ads, so a person who posts a lot, or posts in a valuable category such as cars, pays per ad. Third, business accounts ("Pro" plans) for shops and traders. Fourth, and growing fastest, a fee on each sale when the buyer pays and ships through the site. Display advertising sits on top, but it is shrinking at Vend's second-hand sites (change 1 above).
Who pays has moved. Ten years ago the seller paid, if anyone did. In 2025-2026 the buyer pays more and more often, through a "buyer protection" or "secure payment" fee that is added at checkout. Kleinanzeigen, Marktplaats, Wallapop and Ricardo now charge buyers in some form. Trade Me in New Zealand went furthest (change 3 above). This is the model Vinted made popular. Vinted and other transactional marketplaces are covered in Niche marketplaces and services; cars, property and jobs, which carry the highest listing prices, have their own sections.
Other changes in the period: Kleinanzeigen rebuilt its Pro plans in May 202664. Baltic Classifieds Group changed its prices for private sellers in March 202665. The one regulator action on price came in Switzerland, where the Price Supervisor got Ricardo to grant 10% discounts on some selling fees from April 202666. Facebook Marketplace, free to list nearly everywhere, sets the price ceiling for all of them. Prices below were checked in November 2026 unless a source says otherwise. Where we could only find a dated secondary source, we say "reported".

A dash means we could not verify the price from the site or a dated source. Several big sites (Leboncoin, Kleinanzeigen, Kijiji) show the price of a bump or top ad only in the posting flow, and it changes by category.
Leboncoin
Leboncoin is France's default place to sell almost anything, with more than 100 million monthly visits in spring 202697.
The paid extras are the same three it has sold for years: a bump to the top of the list ("Tête de liste"), once or every day for 7 or 30 days67; an "Urgent" logo, whose price varies by category98; and "À la Une", a featured slot for 7 or 30 days in the list or in a box beside the results. In property the featured slot is called "Vitrine". À la Une needs at least one photo, and the slot is shown at random among all ads that bought it, so the more sellers buy, the less each one gets. Its price depends on the category and is listed in the terms of sale after login99. The one published bundle is for private sellers of homes: the "Pack Top Visibilité" costs €89.90 for two months and includes 20 photos and seven weekly bumps68.
The newer service is secure payment and delivery. Leboncoin planned to add PayPal next to Apple Pay in this service in early 2025, and the press describes it as France's second e-commerce player after Amazon100. We could not confirm its current fees from Leboncoin or reliable press.
Professionals have paid since the end of 2014, when more than 500,000 offers left within a month of free pro listings ending69. Pro prices are not published. Leboncoin's last published revenue was €550 million, for 202397.
Kleinanzeigen and willhaben
Kleinanzeigen publishes the most detailed rules of any general site we checked, and they show how "free" is managed. A private seller lists up to 100 goods, services or jobs ads in 30 days for free, then pays €1.99 for each extra ad. In cars, the free allowance is two new ads in any 30 days, and only for cars priced under €30,000; the third ad costs €9.99, and so does renewing any car ad. A car priced at €30,000 or more pays €9.99 from the first ad. Property has its own caps, such as two active rental or sale ads at once, then €19.99 or €21.99 per ad. Deleted ads still count toward the 30-day limit, so deleting and reposting does not reset it9. Private car sellers can also buy a "Plus" package, from €11.99 for 14 days, for a higher position, a masked phone number and up to 40 photos71. The terms allow Kleinanzeigen to limit free ads and charge for more101.
Visibility products are a bump (once, or daily for 7 days)102, a Highlight (a purple background for 7 days, priced by category and, for businesses, by plan)103, a Top ad (first or second slot on each results page for 7 days, rotating when more are booked than there are slots)104 and a Gallery slot on the local homepage for 10 days70. No price list is published: the price is shown before booking.
Businesses pay more and get less for free. From 1 September 2026, business ads run 30 days instead of 60, and commercial sellers get 2 free goods ads per 30 days, then €3.49 to €4.49 each; 1 free services ad, then €3.99 to €8.99; no free job ads (€12.99 to €26.49 each); and no free property ads (€21.99 to €24.99)73. PRO plans start at €39 (Basic), €59 (Power) and €99 (Premium) a month plus VAT; Power adds homepage placement and one permanent Top ad72. From May 2026 new customers choose these plans for one of five category groups, and from the end of May a special €15-a-month tariff covers up to ten ads for goods priced at €25 or less64.
Private users get free ads up to a limit per category; businesses get fewer. Business prices are the top of each range, before VAT, from September 1, 2026. Sources are in the text.

On a sale, "Sicher bezahlen" is free for private sellers. The buyer pays a small fee that depends on the price, which the app shows before payment10. Payments moved in-house on Adyen in March 2026105. Germany's consumer centers named fraud as a problem on the platform106, which is the case the buyer fee is sold on.
Austria's willhaben says more than 4 million users buy and sell there without fees, with PayLivery buyer protection for delivered items74. We could not verify its paid options or business prices.
Ricardo (Switzerland)
Switzerland is the one large European market where the leading general marketplace charges the seller a commission. Ricardo, which runs auctions and fixed-price sales, charges a success fee. In 2022 it raised the fee from 9% to 10% and the cap from CHF 190 to CHF 290; in 2018 the cap had been CHF 4075. We found no current rates from an open, recent source; Ricardo's help pages refused automated access.
The Swiss Price Supervisor took up sellers' complaints. In January 2026 it announced an agreement under which Ricardo grants 10% discounts on success fees for several sale formats, such as all auctions starting at CHF 1, and for large sellers with sales of at least CHF 100,000, by 1 April 2026 at the latest66. Buyers also pay: Money Guard, which holds the money until the buyer approves, became compulsory for fixed-price sales sent by parcel under CHF 1,500, and costs buyers 2% to 5% of the item price (reported)76.
We could not verify tutti.ch's prices; its pages refused automated access.
Marktplaats and Wallapop
Marktplaats, the Dutch general site, charges no sales commission in most categories and earns from paid listings and top ads77. Its "Direct kopen" (buy now) option makes buyer protection compulsory. In one example given by a consumer program the fee was 5%; sellers ship with DHL or PostNL and get the money within seven days11. We could not verify the prices of its paid options or of its Belgian sister sites.
Wallapop had revenue of €101 million in 2024107. With Naver's purchase approved in early 2026, Spanish tech press expects new fees, possibly a commission on sellers and caps on free ads, as Naver did at Poshmark108. We could not verify current prices for Wallapop or Milanuncios, Spain's other big general site, on their own pages.
The Nordics, the Baltics and Bazoš
Vend (formerly Schibsted Marketplaces) owns the leading general sites in four countries: Blocket in Sweden, FINN in Norway, DBA in Denmark and Tori in Finland. Its results show where the money in second-hand goods now comes from. In the third quarter of 2026 the Recommerce unit handled a record 1.9 million transactions, up 31%. Transaction revenue rose 19% to NOK 151 million, more than twice the unit's listing revenue of NOK 63 million. Inside listing revenue, private sellers paid NOK 36 million, up 59%, while professionals paid NOK 27 million, down 28%. The unit still lost money, with an EBITDA margin of -18%, after more marketing and shipping incentives in Norway109. In July 2026 Klarna began adding its payment methods to all four sites through Adyen, first for ad payments and then for goods79.
Blocket has the longest history of charging private sellers. Around 2001 it began charging SEK 20 per ad, paid by phone, and lost only about a quarter of its daily ads when it did110. It made private ads free again in home, personal, electronics and hobby categories only in May 2022, where they had cost SEK 15 to 30 each78. On Tori, a ToriDiili listing for a €20 item shows a €2 service fee and delivery from €2.95, and the buyer gets 24 hours to check the item80. We could not verify current fees for FINN or DBA.
Baltic Classifieds Group, which owns Skelbiu.lt and KuldneBörs.ee among others, put its effort into businesses. In the year to April 2026, business-to-consumer revenue grew 13% against 1% for consumer-to-consumer revenue, which faster property sales held back by shrinking the pool of private listings. Real estate grew 17% to €26.0 million, while the generalist segment grew 3% to €13.6 million. Group revenue was €88.5 million at a 78% EBITDA margin. The chief executive expects "strategic C2C price changes" made in March 2026, plus business products in the autumn, to bring growth back to double digits65.
Bazoš, the Czech general site, publishes a price list a small site could copy. An ad is free for two months, with at most 50 ads per user that are not topped, except in Jobs and Services, which need a paid voucher81. A top placement costs one voucher: 49 Kč by card or bank transfer, or 59 Kč through the apps. Real estate agencies can import ads automatically for 2 Kč each82. We could not open Jófogás's prices in Hungary.
OLX and Avito
OLX, owned by Prosus, now runs in seven markets: Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Portugal, France, South Africa and Ukraine111. Its group results are in the table in How classifieds sites and marketplaces make money.
OLX Poland is not fully free. It gives private sellers a free allowance per category and charges after that. In March 2019 it began charging for every Services ad, at 19.99 zł, or 13.99 zł in two subcategories112. Car ads are priced by the car's value: in July 2025 a standard ad cost 34.99 zł for a car worth under 5,000 zł and 184.99 zł above 150,000 zł, with a premium ad at 239.99 zł (reported)83. Since 2022, a seller over the free limit can choose "Pay if you sell": the listing goes up with OLX shipping and the fee, set by price and category, is charged only after a sale84. In Ukraine, OLX has built a delivery side: in October 2025 Ukrposhta added cash on delivery for OLX orders, with free delivery on items from UAH 100 and up to 20 kg85. The Ukrainian business's revenue rose from about UAH 1.18 billion in 2022 to UAH 3.5 billion in 2025, with net profit of UAH 994 million113.
OLX India is now owned by CarTrade Tech. In the October-December 2025 quarter its revenue rose 18% to ₹58.7 crore and its profit 37% to ₹20.1 crore114. That is a profit margin of about 34%. We could not open its price pages. Quikr, once its rival, had revenue fall 45% in its 2021 financial year115; its site refused automated access.
Avito in Russia kept posting free and charged for extras. In February 2012 a week in the most visible spot cost ₽180 and a week in the VIP block ₽90, while about 90% of listings came from private sellers86. We found no current price list we could open. In 2023, the last year with widely reported figures, Avito earned ₽101 billion in revenue and ₽39 billion in net profit49.
Craigslist
Craigslist is the clearest example of charging per post in a few categories and nothing elsewhere. As of November 2026 the US fees are: jobs $10 to $75 depending on the area; gigs $3 to $10; apartment rentals $5 in the Boston, Chicago and New York areas; commercial real estate $5; anything for sale by a dealer $5; services $5; and cars, trucks, RVs and motorcycles sold by their owners $58. Payment is one charge per post, taken when it is created, with no subscription. Fees vary by area and can change88. A paid post stays up for 30 days. There is no bump: a paid post cannot be moved back to the top, and a new post or repost must be bought instead87. Fees are not refunded, even for posts Craigslist removes116. High-volume posters can apply for paid posting accounts and block purchases, approved case by case117.
The fee list grew one category at a time. Craigslist began charging $25 for job posts on its San Francisco site in about 1998, raised that to $75, and in August 2004 added $25 job fees in New York and Los Angeles, its first new revenue stream in six years118. Its business is in decline: the AIM Group estimates revenue at $302 million in 2024, down 20% in a year and 70% below the 2018 peak of more than $1 billion119.
Our worked example: a used-car dealer who keeps 40 cars on Craigslist pays $5 per post. Because paid posts expire after 30 days and reposting is charged again, the dealer pays about $200 a month, every month, with no way to buy a better position. A private owner selling one car pays $5 once.
Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji and Gumtree
Facebook Marketplace sets the floor. It charges no listing fee, and local pickups cost nothing. Since January 2025 selected eBay listings appear on Marketplace in the US, Germany and France89. That came two months after the European Commission fined Meta €797.72 million for tying Marketplace to Facebook120. This was a regulator action about competition, not prices. For the general sites, Marketplace means a private seller always has a free option, which caps what they can charge for a basic ad.
Kijiji in Canada sells paid features: Bump Up, which refreshes an ad's posting date; Top Ad; and Urgent, Reduced and Featured labels121. A Top Ad runs for 3, 7 or 30 days depending on the category, and rotates with other Top Ads when demand is high, so Kijiji says it is not shown on every page load90. Prices appear only while posting; we could not verify them.
Gumtree UK signed its first delivery deal, with ShipStation, so sellers can print labels and buyers can track parcels in the site. Its stated aim is to become a fully transactional marketplace92. For businesses it sells pay-as-you-go credits, bought in bundles with volume discounts and spent on new ads or bumps, or a Pro-account subscription with an account manager; ads stay live for 60 days. Extras are a featured slot that rotates at the top of the page, a 7-day Homepage Spotlight and an "Urgent" tag. No prices are published91. Gumtree Australia, a separate listed company, saw revenue fall 7% to A$69.6 million in the year to June 2026, though EBITDA rose 29% to A$7.8 million and it made a A$3.5 million pre-tax profit122. We could not verify either Gumtree's bump or featured prices.
Trade Me
Trade Me shows what happens when a general site that charged sellers meets Facebook Marketplace. Trade Me dropped its 7.9% success fee for casual sellers in March 2026 (change 3 above) and stopped allowing bank transfers. Ping, its own payment method, is now offered on every listing next to cash and Afterpay, with a 2.19% fee for the seller and buyer protection up to NZ$5,000. The buyer pays a service fee of NZ$0.99 on items from NZ$20.01 to NZ$100, NZ$1.99 from NZ$100.01 to NZ$250, and NZ$4.99 above; 44% of trades are under NZ$20 and carry no buyer fee. Trade Me said 90% of the scams it could not help with in 2025 involved bank transfers4.
Our worked example: a casual seller sells a bike for NZ$150. Before March 2026 the success fee was 7.9%, or NZ$11.85. Now, if the buyer pays by Ping, the seller pays 2.19%, NZ$3.29, and the buyer adds NZ$1.99. Trade Me collects NZ$5.28 instead of NZ$11.85, but the charge is tied to safe payment, which buyers can see, rather than to the act of selling.
Middle East and Africa
Haraj, the Saudi leader, has the most unusual fee in this report. Its fee is 1% of any sale, rental or exchange involving money, owed by the advertiser even if the buyer agreed to pay it. Real estate listings carry no fee, and fees under SAR 20 can be donated to charity instead. Stores can buy an annual subscription instead of paying 1% per sale, and sellers who pay fees get a badge on their profile93. The commission works on trust: Haraj does not handle the payment, so it relies on sellers to pay it.
OpenSooq, founded in Jordan, had over 100 million unique users last year and has been profitable since 2019, with EBITDA margins above 45% in mature markets. Its co-founder puts its earnings at about $0.05 per internet user, against roughly $30 for the best global classifieds firms. That gap is why it is moving into services such as "sell it for me" for cars and property, a rent-now-pay-later model in Saudi Arabia and rental management for a commission94.
Dubizzle Group does not publish its listing prices for private sellers. Its UAE business made $105 million in adjusted revenue in the first half of 2025, 89% of the group total, and its adjusted EBITDA margin rose from 31% to 46% in a year95. Most of that comes from property agents and car dealers (see Car sites and Property portals), not from private sellers of goods.
Jiji operates in Nigeria and other African markets. We could not open its premium price pages, so we give no figures. Jiji says it serves more than 90 million users a year123. In May 2026 it bought Bikroy in Bangladesh, paid for from its own resources124.
Asia
Xianyu, Alibaba's resale app, began as a casual peer-to-peer site. Since mid-2023 it has charged a 1% service fee on the part of a seller's sales above RMB 10,000 and 10 orders a month, and sellers it flags as commercial must accept seven-day returns96. That is a fee aimed squarely at hidden traders, with casual sellers left alone.
Carousell, in Singapore and its other markets, has moved from plain classifieds to managed resale, so more of its money now comes from handling the sale, not from bumps or listing fees (see Transaction fees in How classifieds sites and marketplaces make money). We could not verify Carousell's current bump prices.
Karrot (Danggeun Market) in South Korea shows a third route. Its 2025 revenue was KRW 270.7 billion, up 43%, with an operating profit of KRW 14.6 billion. The number of advertisers rose 37% and local businesses created about 2.65 million business profiles125. Next to advertising, "Instant Buy", a secure payment option for second-hand sales, now adds transaction revenue62. The local shop next door pays to reach the neighbors.
Worked examples
These are our worked examples, built from the prices above.
- A private seller in Germany listing a third car in a month. A seller who replaces two family cars and then lists a third one, all under €30,000, pays €0, €0 and then €9.999. On Craigslist in the US, each of the three would cost $58. On OLX in Poland, three cars worth 30,000 to 40,000 zł would cost 119.99 zł or more each (reported)83.
Lessons for smaller sites
- Keep the basic private ad free, and cap it instead of pricing it. Kleinanzeigen lets a private seller post two cars in 30 days for free and charges €9.99 for the third, which charges the hidden traders without scaring casual sellers9.
- Charge per post where the poster is a business, as Craigslist does. Its fees are on jobs, gigs, dealers, services, commercial property, a few apartment markets and owner-sold vehicles; everything else is free8.
- Publish a short price list. Bazoš shows its whole model on one help page: free ads for two months, 49 Kč for a top placement or a jobs or services ad82.
- If you add payments, charge the buyer and tie the fee to protection. Trade Me cut its seller success fee from 7.9% to a 2.19% payment fee plus a buyer fee of NZ$0.99 to NZ$4.99, and linked the change to scams on bank transfers4.
- Do not expect transactions to pay quickly. Vend's second-hand unit made more than twice as much from transactions as from listings in the third quarter of 2026, and still lost money (EBITDA margin -18%)109. A small site without shipping deals can stay with simple paid extras.
- Put pricing effort into business customers. At Baltic Classifieds Group, business revenue grew 13% in the year to April 2026 against 1% for revenue from private sellers65.
- Sell local businesses access to local buyers. Karrot made KRW 270.7 billion in 2025, and its advertisers grew 37% in a year125.
- A fee you cannot collect is a request, not a price. Haraj asks sellers for 1% of each sale but does not handle the payment93. A small site is better off selling a clear upfront product (a bump, a featured week, a business plan) that it can charge at the moment of purchase.
Car sites
Car classifieds are the most profitable kind of classifieds business, and almost all of that money comes from dealers. The usual model has three parts. Private sellers pay a one-off fee per ad in some countries (the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, Brazil) and nothing, or nothing below a price limit, in others (Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Canada, India). Dealers pay a monthly subscription, usually priced per rooftop or per forecourt and scaled by how many cars they list, with paid "depth" products on top (extra placement, badges, valuation and lead tools). A smaller group of sites takes a fee on the sale itself. These are mostly enthusiast auctions in the US, where the buyer pays a percentage.
The listed groups show how lopsided this is. Auto Trader in the UK made £624.3 million in the year to March 2026, and private sellers brought in only £23.6 million of it2. carsales in Australia put its 8% dealer growth down to more leads, better yield and more depth products126.
Three things changed in 2025-2026. First, portals pushed further into the sale itself: Auto Trader linked a drop in dealer forecourts partly to concern about how it rolled out Deal Builder, its tool for starting a car deal online (change 6 above)127. Second, regulators moved against portals that steer sellers to their own services. Turkey's competition authority made Sahibinden accept limits on its Otobid car auction128. Third, private seller fees came under pressure from free rivals. Auto Trader's private revenue fell 11%127, and Trade Me dropped its success fee for casual sellers (change 3 above).
A note on method: we checked prices on the sites' own price, help and app store pages in November 2026. Where a site shows its price only inside the listing flow, we give a dated third-party figure and say "reported". A dash means we could not verify the price, not that the site charges nothing.

Auto Trader UK
Auto Trader is the clearest case of a car portal that charges both sides of the classifieds market. Private sellers pay per ad. The price depends on the band the car's value falls into and on how long the ad runs. The longest package, "Advertised until sold", runs in ten-week periods, and the seller can rebook it free for as long as the car is unsold, as long as there is no break in advertising129.
Private ads are a small and shrinking line. Private revenue fell 11% to £23.6 million in the year to March 2026, from £26.6 million, inside a consumer services line of £38.8 million127.
Dealers are the business. ARPR rose £141 to £2,995 a month (change 6 above). The company splits ARPR growth into three levers. The price lever, from its annual 1 April pricing and product event, added £117. The product lever added £72, mostly from putting Co-Driver, its AI tool that writes vehicle descriptions and sorts photos, into retailer packages. The stock lever, which tracks how many cars retailers pay to list, took £48 away127. Pre-tax profit rose 3% to £388.8 million149. Retailer revenue of £501.1 million was roughly 20 times what private sellers paid127.
mobile.de and AutoScout24
Germany shows the opposite choice on private sellers. Both big car portals let most private sellers list for free and earn from dealers.
On mobile.de, a private ad is free for a car priced up to €30,000, according to the site's own app store listing, which also says more than 14 million people search the site each month130. Above that limit, and for extra visibility, the seller pays. mobile.de's own price page refused our requests in November 2026, so we leave its paid package prices blank. This is a soft paywall: the cheap car stays free, the expensive car pays.
AutoScout24 Germany lets a private seller publish up to two basic ads free, each with up to 50 photos, and sells add-on packages that move the car higher in search results131. It also offers a free instant sale to a vetted partner dealer132. That turns private sellers into stock for its paying dealers. On the Belgian site the upgrades are called Super and Turbo, and a "Plus Pack" makes either boost last longer150.
AutoScout24 prices the same model differently by country. In Italy listing is free for private sellers, and dealers buy subscriptions133. In Switzerland, where AutoScout24 belongs to SMG Swiss Marketplace Group, private ads are paid, but the Swiss price pages refused our requests in November 2026. Swiss trade press reported that AutoScout24 raised dealer fees by about 15% from 1 June 2026, and that some garages left the site over it134.
Neither German portal publishes dealer prices.
carsales and Trade Me Motors
In Australia, carsales earns most from dealers. At CAR Group, its owner, Australian dealer revenue rose 8% in the year to June 2026, driven by more leads, better yield and more uptake of depth products. Private revenue rose 4%, mostly thanks to Instant Offer, which sells a private car straight to a dealer, and to better yield126. CAR Group also owns 70% of Webmotors in Brazil, after buying 40% from Santander in 2023 in a deal that valued Webmotors at R$3.1 billion151.
Trade Me Motors in New Zealand charges private sellers upfront, like the UK, and takes no success or withdrawal fee on cars. Private sellers choose Basic, Standard or Premium, priced by asking price, as of November 2026. Basic runs from NZ$9.99 for a car under NZ$2,000 to NZ$99.99 for NZ$25,000 and up. Standard runs from NZ$29.99 to NZ$149.99, and Premium from NZ$69.99 to NZ$199.99. Trade Me says Standard gets 75% more views than Basic, and Premium 250% more. A listing runs up to 90 days. Renewing a Basic ad is free, while renewing Standard or Premium costs NZ$7.99 to NZ$59.99. These prices apply to members who list fewer than 10 cars in 12 months and are not registered traders; the rest move to a trader plan138. Auctions are priced separately, by reserve. Trade Me has also tested a new listing process with different fees, a 90-day duration and a reduced fee to keep a listing going after 90 days152.
CarGurus and Cars.com (US)
In the US, private sellers mostly list free or very cheaply, and the big car portals earn almost all their money from dealers. Craigslist charges $5 for a car posted by its owner or by a dealer (see General classifieds above)8. Facebook Marketplace charges no listing fees, and local pickup avoids shipping costs89. Any paid private ad in the US competes with those two.
CarGurus is the clearest freemium model. Dealers can list free as "Restricted Listings" with capped, anonymous leads. Paid tiers add visibility, leads and tools, and are priced by the dealer's inventory size and region and by the return CarGurus expects to deliver153. Revenue rose 14% to $907.0 million in 2025. CarGurus put that down mainly to new dealers signed at market rates, tier upgrades, add-on products and like-for-like price rises. It had 26,049 paying US dealers at the end of 2025, and its US QARSD was $7,938153. By the second quarter of 2026 that had risen to $8,134 a quarter, about $2,700 a month by our arithmetic, across 26,151 US paying dealers140.
Cars.com grew much more slowly. Revenue was $723.2 million in 2025, up from $719.2 million, and dealers brought in 89% of it. Its ARPD fell 1% to $2,460 a month for the year, and it ended the year with 19,544 dealer customers154. In the second quarter of 2026, ARPD was $2,500, up 3% on a year earlier, across 19,343 dealers139.
So a US dealer pays CarGurus about $2,700 a month and Cars.com about $2,500, the same order as Auto Trader's £2,995 ARPR. The lesson from the US is that a free private tier does not stop a portal from making money. It decides where the money comes from. With Facebook taking casual sellers for free, the paid market is dealers, and it is sold on lead quality and price-rating tools rather than on reach alone.
Enthusiast auctions
The only big car platforms that take a cut of the sale are the US enthusiast auctions, and they charge mostly the buyer. As of November 2026, Bring a Trailer charges the seller a flat $99 listing fee, with an optional $330 photo service, and nothing else. The buyer pays 5% of the winning bid, with a $250 minimum and a $7,500 cap. In some auction categories the fee is 10%, capped at $4,000142. In February 2025 its rival Cars & Bids moved from 4.5% (cap $4,500) to the same 5%, $7,500 cap and $250 minimum143. Fee matching like this is common in two-player markets: the challenger had been cheaper and gave that up once it needed the revenue.
The model works at scale. Bring a Trailer sold more than $1.7 billion in 2025, its fourth year above $1 billion, from 49,486 auctions of cars, trucks, motorcycles, memorabilia and parts, with an 81% sell-through rate155. By our arithmetic, that is an average sale of about $42,000. If every sale paid the full 5%, buyer fees would come to about $85 million. The cap brings the real figure lower, because cars above $150,000 pay the same $7,500. Seller fees at $99 per auction would add under $5 million.
Why the buyer pays: the seller of a collector car compares the site with a physical auction house, where combined fees can be far higher. The buyer accepts a percentage because the auction format and public comments build trust in the car. The cap keeps the most expensive cars on the site.
Online retailers such as Carvana and Auto1's Autohero buy and resell their own stock, so they do not charge listing fees and are not covered here. The UK showed the risk of that model when Cazoo entered administration in May 2024156.
Free and cheap markets
Outside the UK and Australasia, most European portals let private sellers list free and sell visibility. La Centrale in France invites sellers to post an ad free, and sells options inside its app as of November 2026: priority placement for 30 days at €39.99, "points forts" highlights for 30 days at €22.99, a masked phone number for 60 days at €7.99, and a visibility pack at €54.99135. Coches.net in Spain also offers free private ads136, and serves about 7,000 dealers52. AutoTrader.ca in Canada lists private cars free and sells optional promotion packages141. CarDekho in India lists a private car free once it has checked the details148.
Poland is the exception. Otomoto charges every private seller, priced by the car's value. A July 2025 comparison reported 39.99 zł for the cheapest car ad, 109.99 to 214.99 zł for a car worth 30,000 to 40,000 zł, and up to 329.99 zł for an "Advanced" ad on a car over 300,000 zł83. Polish dealers told Auto Świat they paid several thousand zł a month across the leading portals, and some were moving to cheaper or free rivals137.
Two sites try a middle path. Chileautos gives private sellers a free 7-day ad with up to 4 photos, but asks for a credit card and then charges a paid Standard ad unless the seller cancels147. Webmotors in Brazil sells three paid plans, Economic, Plus and Premium, priced by the seller's location, and takes nothing on the sale146.
Emerging and regional markets
Outside the big listed portals, car pricing is less transparent, and three patterns stand out.
The first is the placing fee. Mercado Libre charges sellers only placing fees for vehicle, property and services classifieds, not the final value fees of its marketplace, and earns more from sellers who pay for greater exposure145. Its price pages refused our requests in November 2026, so the amounts are blank in the table. In the UAE, dubizzle's standard car ad costs AED 599 for 30 days. Sellers can instead pay AED 99 to sign up for a managed sale, plus a small percentage of the final price144.
The second is the commission that relies on trust. Haraj, a Saudi general classifieds site (see General classifieds above), asks the seller for 1% of any sale, and stores, including car showrooms, can buy an annual subscription instead93. Sellers transfer the fee to Haraj themselves, so it depends on them paying it.
The third is the portal that also deals in cars, and the regulators who watch it. Turkey's competition board fined Sahibinden TL 40.2 million (about $1.5 million) in 2023, finding it dominant in vehicle and real estate listings157. In January 2025 it imposed interim measures in a second case over Otobid, Sahibinden's used car trading service. The case closed in January 2026 after Sahibinden agreed to remove Otobid from its home page, stop redirecting sellers to it while they list a car, keep user data separate, and make Otobid's revenue cover its variable and advertising costs once it reaches a set size128.
Ownership kept changing. Prosus's OLX sold the last unit of OLX Autos, its car-buying business, in August 2025, and bought France's La Centrale for about €1.1 billion53. OLX also runs Autovit in Romania, where it said car listings passed €1.2 billion in total value158. EQT agreed in July 2025 to buy Adevinta's Spanish businesses, including Coches.net52. Dubizzle Group bought Egypt's Hatla2ee car marketplace in February 2025159. In India, CarTrade Tech, owner of CarWale and BikeWale, bought OLX India and its car-buying arm in 2023160.
These groups rarely publish car prices in investor material, and several of their price pages block automated visits. That is why some cells in the table are still blank for these countries.
Worked examples
These are our worked examples, using the prices above as of November 2026. Prices marked "reported" in the table come from dated trade or national press.
A £10,000 car (about €11,500) in the UK, Germany and France. In the UK, a private seller on Auto Trader pays to advertise, at a price set by the car's value and the ad's length129. In Germany, the same car is well under mobile.de's €30,000 free limit, so the private ad costs nothing130. On AutoScout24 Germany the basic ad is also free. In France, the ad on La Centrale is free, and 30 days of priority placement adds €39.99135. The UK seller pays to be seen at all. The German and French sellers pay only to be seen first.
A NZ$15,000 car in New Zealand. On Trade Me Motors, a car priced from NZ$10,000 to NZ$24,999 costs NZ$89.99 for Basic, NZ$129.99 for Standard and NZ$169.99 for Premium, and a Basic ad renews free. Trade Me takes no cut of the sale138.
A collector car bought at auction in the US. On Bring a Trailer, the seller pays $99. The buyer of a $40,000 car pays a 5% fee of $2,000. The buyer of a $200,000 car pays $7,500, not $10,000, because of the cap, which starts to apply at $150,000142.
A SAR 60,000 car in Saudi Arabia and an AED 60,000 car in the UAE. Haraj charges nothing to post. If the car sells, the seller is asked for SAR 60093. On dubizzle, the standard ad costs AED 599 for 30 days, whether or not the car sells144.
Lessons for smaller sites
- Charge dealers, not private sellers. Auto Trader's private sellers paid £23.6 million of its £624.3 million revenue in the year to March 2026, under 4%2.
- If you charge private sellers, price by the car's value. Trade Me's Basic car ad runs from NZ$9.99 under NZ$2,000 to NZ$99.99 at NZ$25,000 and up, so a cheap car is not priced off the site138.
- A free limit by car price is a good middle path. mobile.de lists private cars free up to €30,000 and charges only for dearer cars and for visibility130.
- Sell time and position. La Centrale sells 30 days of priority placement for €39.99 and highlights for €22.99135.
- Use a free tier to sign up dealers, then upsell. CarGurus lets dealers list free with capped leads and earned about $8,100 a quarter from each paying US dealer in mid-2026140.
- For enthusiast cars, charge the buyer a capped percentage. Bring a Trailer charges the seller $99 and the buyer 5% capped at $7,500142, and sold $1.7 billion this way in 2025155.
- Raise dealer prices slowly and add a tool each year. Auto Trader's yearly April price rise added £117 to ARPR, but pushing Deal Builder too fast cost it forecourts127.
- Do not steer sellers to your own services. Turkey's competition board made Sahibinden stop redirecting sellers to its own car trading service while they list128.
Property portals
Property portals have the clearest split of any classifieds category: private owners pay little or nothing, and agents, developers and landlords with many units pay almost everything. In the UK the leader does not take private ads at all. Its customers are estate agency branches and new-homes developers, and it reports what each one pays per month as ARPA1. In Spain and Germany, private sellers and landlords can still list for free, with paid boosts on top: Fotocasa gives private users free ads and sells a week at the top for €29.95, and ImmoScout24 gives landlords one free basic ad every six months161,162. In the US, the money comes from buyer leads sold to agents and from rental advertising, not from listing fees46.
Three things changed in 2025-2026. First, growth came from price, not volume, at REA and Rightmove (changes 4 and 5 above). In Sweden the limit of that approach showed: after paid listings fell, Hemnet launched its first free listing format in October 2026163. Second, a new big spender arrived. CoStar bought Domain in Australia, owns OnTheMarket in the UK, and is moving both onto its Homes.com software, a model that sells memberships to agents rather than buyer leads45. Third, the portals fought over who controls listings, most visibly Zillow and the US brokerage Compass (see Zillow below).
For a smaller site, the lesson of this category is simple to state and hard to copy. The leaders charge the professionals who need the audience every month, and they keep private listings cheap so that the audience keeps coming.

Prices from a portal's own page were checked in November 2026. A dash means we could not verify the price.
Rightmove (UK)
Rightmove is the model that every agent-funded portal is measured against. It does not sell ads to private owners. It sells monthly memberships to estate agency branches and new-homes developers, and adds paid products on top. Its 2025 results are in change 4 above.
Most of the 2025 agency ARPA rise (62%) came from products rather than the base price, and 35% of agents were on the top Optimiser Edge package1. In the first half of 2026 the company's presentation put ARPA at £1,726, up £117 on a year earlier, and said 58% of that rise came from products164. Revenue rose 7% to £225.8 million in that half, and Rightmove kept its guidance of £110 to £120 of ARPA growth for 2026181.
Our worked example: an agency branch on the H1 2026 average pays about £1,726 a month, or about £20,700 a year, to one portal. If 2026 ends at the top of guidance (£1,621 plus £120), the average advertiser will pay about £1,741 a month. Rightmove does not publish its rate card, so a branch's real bill depends on its package and region.
Rightmove's pricing power is the reason rival portals keep appearing. OnTheMarket was launched by agents to get away from it, and is now owned by CoStar, which plans to move it onto Homes.com software in 202745. So far the challenge has not shown in Rightmove's numbers: Comscore measured it at 89% of the time people spent on UK property portals in December 2025, up from 83% a year earlier1.
REA and Domain (Australia)
Australia works differently from the UK. Agents pay a subscription, but the big money is in "depth" listings: a seller (the vendor) pays, through the agent, for a bigger, higher-placed ad for one property. REA's top product is Premiere+. Change 5 above gives REA's results for the year to June 2026. REA named four causes for its 13% rise in Buy yield: a 7% average Premiere+ price rise, more add-on products, higher subscription revenue and more sellers choosing depth listings. Rent revenue grew on a 6% average price rise while rental listings fell 1%167.
Our worked example: with the 7% rise in FY26 and the planned 8% in FY27, a vendor will pay about 15.6% more for the same Premiere+ product than two years earlier (1.07 × 1.08), in a market where REA itself expects no more homes for sale167.
Domain, the number two, answered REA under its new owner CoStar by competing on price (change 5 above). The free Matterport 3D tours and drone photos in its higher-tier packages could save vendors up to A$1,000 a campaign, it said24. The gap between a 4% cap and an 8% rise is the clearest price test in property portals this year. If agents and vendors move to Domain, it will show in REA's depth penetration (the share of listings that buy a depth product). If they do not, it shows how little a number two can do on price alone.
REA also left India. In July 2026 it agreed to sell Housing.com to Aurum PropTech and keep a 24.9% stake in Aurum, while its international revenue fell 38% to A$81 million22.
Hemnet and FINN
In the Nordics the seller pays for each listing, usually through the agent, and the portal prices it by region and by the home's value. FINN's price page shows the model plainly. In 2025 an agent's small package for a home for sale cost NOK 1,489 to NOK 3,602 before VAT, depending on which of four regions the home is in and its asking price; the large package cost NOK 4,117 to NOK 9,960. A week at the top of results ("Ukens bolig") cost NOK 1,667 to NOK 2,609, and a renewal that lifts the ad back to the top NOK 1,347 to NOK 2,173170. For 2026 FINN raised prices on all packages, cut volume discounts (0-20%), and stopped giving any discount on the small package171,182.
Hemnet in Sweden shows what happens when price rises run into a weak market. In the third quarter of 2026 its average revenue per paid listing rose 9.2% to SEK 8,986, helped by top-tier packages and by about 4 in 10 sellers picking the higher-priced "Sell first, pay later" option, where Hemnet is paid when the home sells. But paid listings fell 29.6% to 29,300, net sales fell 17.8% to SEK 301.5 million, and the EBITDA margin dropped to 47.8% from 53.3%163.
Hemnet's answer was to add a free tier. Since 20 October 2026 agents can publish a free entry-level listing, and Hemnet said it would also show listings collected automatically from agency websites. The paid packages are now Bas, Premium and Max, with Bas taking over the features of the old Plus package, and a new compensation model for agencies started on 1 November163,169. The bet is that free listings bring back the full inventory, and that sellers will still pay to stand out among them.
In the Netherlands, Funda, owned by the agents' association NVM, has faced complaints that it shuts out other brokers. The competition authority ACM stopped its latest investigation in February 2022 after finding no convincing evidence that Funda's conditions harmed brokers or homeowners183. We found no newer case, and Funda's own pages blocked our checks, so it has no row in the table.
Zillow (US)
Zillow does not charge for listings of homes for sale. Agents' listings flow in from local listing services, and Zillow sells the buyers and sellers who contact it. Its Premier Agent product is sold in two ways: market-based pricing, a subscription where leads are shared out in proportion to what each agent spends, or pay for performance, where the agent pays nothing up front and owes Zillow a fee when a deal closes. The second program was called Flex and became Zillow Preferred in 202546. A trade guide describes the fee as a share of the agent's commission that varies by market184. Zillow's own pricing page refused our requests, so we do not give a rate.
Our worked example, with assumed numbers: an agent wins a $500,000 sale through a Zillow Preferred connection and earns a 2.5% commission, or $12,500. At an assumed 35% fee, Zillow takes $4,375, and the agent keeps $8,125 before brokerage splits. US commissions are negotiable, so the fee moves with whatever the agent agreed.
In 2025, Zillow's Rentals revenue grew 39% to $630 million, with multifamily rentals revenue up 58%, and Zillow had 2.4 million active rental listings a month, including 72,000 multifamily properties, up 44%46. Rentals is now the fast-growing part of the US property portal business, and it is paid for by property managers, not small landlords.
The 2024 settlement with the National Association of Realtors (NAR), which ended the rule that sellers routinely pay the buyer's agent, was expected to squeeze portals that sell buyer leads. So far commissions have not fallen, though more buyers now go without an agent, according to a 2025 study185. Investors read the settlement as good news for CoStar, whose Homes.com charges listing agents rather than buyer agents186.
The listing fight is about supply, not price. Zillow's Listing Access Standards bar homes that were marketed privately first. Compass sued, and on February 6, 2026 a federal judge in New York refused a preliminary injunction, so the standards stayed in force187,188. On March 18 Compass dismissed the suit, after Zillow launched Zillow Preview for pre-market listings and updated its standards189,190. A portal that sells leads needs every listing, because every missing home is a lost buyer contact.
Small landlords
For a small landlord, listing is still cheap. On Craigslist most housing posts are free. It charges $5 per apartment rental post only in the Boston, Chicago and New York areas, and $5 for commercial real estate across the US8. A small fee in the busiest cities works as a spam filter as much as a revenue line.
SpareRoom in the UK charges both sides of a room share. A basic ad is free, but for its first 7 days only paying "Early Bird" users can contact it. Room seekers pay £15 a week, £27 for two weeks or £30 for 28 days for that access165. Landlords can buy Bold advertising at the same short-term prices, or £149 for six months and £199 for a year, with extra listings from £10 each166. In New Zealand, Trade Me charges NZ$9.90 for a flatmates-wanted ad that runs until the room is filled168.
Homes.com and CoStar
CoStar's Homes.com takes the opposite line to Zillow. It promises agents that a buyer who contacts a listing reaches the listing agent, not a rival who bought the lead, and charges agents for a membership instead186. It had more than 31,000 paying agents at the start of 2026, 76% on annual contracts, bringing in nearly $100 million of annual run-rate revenue. CoStar says its network averaged 108 million monthly unique visitors in 2025, against Zillow's reported 235 million45. CoStar planned to triple the Homes.com sales team from 230 to about 750 people during 202525.
The membership price is not published. Our rough calculation from those figures: $100 million a year over 31,000 agents is about $3,200 per agent a year, or about $270 a month. What matters for smaller sites is the pitch: "your listing, your lead" is a promise any portal can make, and it lets a portal charge the seller's agent rather than auctioning the buyer to the highest bidder. CoStar plans to fold Domain into Homes.com within 12 to 18 months and move OnTheMarket onto the same software in 202745.
Idealista
Idealista is the largest southern European portal. Its own price and help pages blocked our requests, and the boost prices quoted in Spanish guides date from 2020, so we leave its paid visibility blank. Agencies pay packages whose prices are not published.
The results show that the agency side pays the bills. Idealista's 2025 revenue was €346 million and its EBITDA €160 million, a margin of about 46%. Spain brought in €186 million, Italy €95 million, up 12%, and Portugal €35 million, up 40%172. Cinven agreed to buy 70% in a 2024 deal that valued the company at €2.9 billion191.
The regulator case often quoted against Idealista is older than it looks. In December 2021 Spain's competition authority, the CNMC, fined seven firms for agreeing on agency commissions through property software, with Idealista's €730,000 the largest fine. Idealista said it does not work in the sanctioned market and would appeal192,193. We found no newer CNMC fine against Idealista.
Fotocasa and ImmoScout24
Scout24 agreed in September 2025 to buy Fotocasa and Habitaclia from EQT for €153 million; at the time the two sites had about 1 million listings and 14,000 agent customers194. Fotocasa's own pages set out a clear freemium model. A private user can publish up to six free ads as long as each is a different property type; a second ad of the same type costs €19.95. Free sale ads run 365 days and rental ads 180 days, while paid ads last 30 days173. Top placement costs €29.95 for 7 days or €119.95 for 30 days, taxes included161.
ImmoScout24 in Germany is stricter with free ads and prices sales much higher than rentals. A private landlord gets one free basic rental ad every six months, running 14 days with up to 10 contact requests. Paid rental ads start at €7.90 (Basis), €9.90 (Top) and €19.90 (Premium, first place in results). Sale ads start at €49.90, €69.90 and €89.90. Prices vary with location, the home's price and the number of bookings, and paid ads renew automatically until cancelled162.
Our worked example: a German owner selling a house on Premium pays from €89.90 per run; a landlord letting a flat on Premium pays from €19.90. The same portal charges a seller about 4.5 times what it charges a landlord for the same top spot.
Scout24 does not publish agent prices, but its results show how well the model pays (change 8 above): its operating EBITDA margin was 62.5% in 202533.
Israel and the UAE
Outside Europe and the US, the clearest published numbers come from deals. Yad2, Israel's leading site for property, cars and jobs, was expected to make about €83 million in revenue in 2025 with about €37 million in adjusted EBITDA, a margin of about 45%. Real estate was 56% of revenue, more than cars (27%) and jobs (15%) together. Apax signed a deal to buy it from KKR for about $950 million in December 2025, according to local reports174.
In the UAE, Bayut and Property Finder lead. Dubizzle Group, which owns Bayut and dubizzle, reported $183 million of revenue in 2024 across all its brands. It describes a subscription model for agencies and dealers, with pay-per-listing for individuals, and says it held about 50% of UAE real estate classifieds revenue in 2024175. It postponed its Dubai IPO in October 2025, one day before subscription was due to open195. Property Finder's UAE revenue grew from $30 million in 2021 to $117 million in 2024, and was $73 million in the first half of 2025, with a UAE EBITDA margin above 60%. Permira and Blackstone invested $525 million in September 2025, and Ares lent $250 million a month later176. Both sell to agents and developers. We could not verify their package prices for this report.
Latin America and India
Mercado Libre runs property classifieds alongside its shop, with placing fees only, as in its car listings (see Car sites above)145. In Brazil, OLX Brasil agreed in 2020 to buy the property portal group Grupo ZAP for R$2.9 billion, giving it more than 12 million listings from more than 40,000 agencies196. The private and agent price pages of ZAP, Viva Real and Mexico's Inmuebles24 blocked our requests.
In India, the best-known model for owners is NoBroker's: posting is free and there is no brokerage, but owners can pay for an assisted plan. Rental plans for owners run from ₹3,399 (Relax) to ₹10,999 (Super MoneyBack), and sale plans from ₹7,499 to ₹20,999 for three months, all plus 18% GST178,179. Tenants can buy plans too, mentioned at ₹999 to ₹5,499180. Our worked example: an owner letting a flat on the Relax plan pays ₹3,399 plus ₹612 GST, about ₹4,011, which NoBroker sets against a broker's fee.
Property portals in India are only now making money. Info Edge's 99acres made a profit before tax of ₹34.2 million in January-March 2026, after a ₹204.6 million loss the quarter before31. REA's exit from Housing.com points the same way: a market with huge traffic but low prices per listing22. We could not verify current owner plans on 99acres or MagicBricks for this report.
Lessons for smaller sites
- Charge the professional, keep the owner's first ad free. Rightmove takes no private ads and still earns £1,621 a month per advertiser at a 70% margin1, while Fotocasa lets private users post up to six free ads173.
- Sell depth per listing, not only subscriptions. REA grew Residential revenue 12% with flat listings because more vendors bought Premiere+ and add-ons167.
- Price rises have a limit when volume falls. Hemnet's revenue per paid listing rose 9% but paid listings fell 30%, and it added a free tier163.
- Price boosts against what is at stake. Fotocasa charges €29.95 for a week at the top, and ImmoScout24 charges sellers several times what it charges landlords for the same spot161,162.
- Rentals can grow faster than sales. Zillow's Rentals revenue grew 39% in 2025, against 7% for its agent business46.
- Charge the busier side of the market. SpareRoom's free ads are reserved for paying room seekers in their first week165, and Craigslist charges $5 for apartment posts only in its three busiest rental cities8.
- A challenger can win on price promises. Domain capped its rises at 4% against REA's planned 8%24.
- Offer agents "your listing, your lead". Homes.com signed more than 31,000 paying agents by promising that buyer contacts go to the listing agent45.
Job boards
On a job board, employers pay and candidates almost never do. The old model was a fixed fee for one ad over a set period, often 30 days. Many national boards still sell it that way: Totaljobs in the UK, StepStone in Germany and Austria, Jobindex in Denmark, FINN in Norway, OCC Mundial in Mexico, Naukri in India and hh.ru in Russia all list a price per job ad, with cheaper rates for bundles and yearly contracts. The aggregators, led by Indeed and LinkedIn, work differently. Posting a job can be free. The employer pays to sponsor or promote it, with a daily or monthly budget, and is charged for clicks or started applications197.
Two things changed in 2025 and 2026. First, hiring slowed, but the large boards raised revenue anyway by charging more for each ad. Recruit says Indeed's US average revenue per job posting rose 17% in the year to March 2026 "despite stagnant hiring demand"6. SEEK did the same (change 7 above). The tools were premium ad tiers, AI matching sold inside those tiers, and results-based pricing. Second, the weaker players gave way: CareerBuilder and Monster went bankrupt, Recruit folded Glassdoor into Indeed, and hh.ru in Russia lost paying small businesses (details below).
One term used below: "pay per started application" means the employer pays only when someone starts to apply. ARPC is average revenue per customer, the counterpart of ARPA.

Indeed and Glassdoor
Indeed lets employers post for free and charges for reach. On its Australian and Canadian price pages, as of November 2026, an employer chooses between a free post, a Standard Sponsored Job and a Premium Sponsored Job. Indeed recommends a Standard price from the job title, the market and the hiring timeline, and sets Premium above it. Premium adds matched candidates, an "urgently hiring" label and branding197. The invoice covers clicks or started applications, and comes on the first of the month or once spending reaches $500198. Indeed's Indian guide spells out the split: with a daily budget the employer pays per click, and with a monthly budget it pays per started application199. Not every job can stay free. Jobs imported from career sites, feeds or applicant tracking systems may have to be sponsored197. Indeed does not publish a rate per click or per application, so third-party estimates vary widely. Our advice is to treat any single figure with care.
The results show the model works even when hiring is weak. For the year to March 2026, Recruit's HR Technology segment, mostly Indeed and Glassdoor, grew revenue 6.3% to ¥1,458.4 billion. US revenue rose 8.8% in dollars to $5.31 billion6. In the April to June 2026 quarter, segment revenue from outside customers was ¥454.6 billion224.
Glassdoor no longer runs as a separate business. In July 2025 Recruit said it would cut about 1,300 jobs, roughly 6% of the segment, and fold Glassdoor into Indeed as it adapted to AI. Indeed had already cut 15% of its staff in 2023 and 8% in 2024225. For employers, Glassdoor is now mainly a place for reviews and employer branding next to Indeed's job ads.
LinkedIn Jobs
LinkedIn sells reach in much the same way, but to a professional audience. As of November 2026, an employer can keep one free job post open at a time200. To promote a job, it sets a daily or total budget, and the post pauses once the total is spent. The cost per click changes from day to day with demand and cannot be known until the job is live. Buying the budget in advance saves up to 35%201. Even the minimum budget is not fixed. It depends on the role, the expected number of applicants and whether the employer has promoted jobs before226.
The budget is a ceiling, not a price. LinkedIn's own example: a $10 daily budget over 30 days costs $300 or less, depending on reach. Self-serve charges are taken when the job closes, after 30 days, or at a $500 balance. Employers hiring at scale sign contracts for "Job Slots" instead200. LinkedIn's other big hiring product is Recruiter, which lets in-house recruiters and agencies search members and message them directly. It is sold per seat, and LinkedIn does not publish the price. It varies with company size and the number of seats202. Recruiter Lite, for people who hire a few times a year, can be tried for $0 and includes 30 InMail messages a month, against 150 per seat on Recruiter227. This split, with cheap auctions for small employers and contracts for large ones, is common among the big boards.
ZipRecruiter and Dice
ZipRecruiter sells mostly to small US businesses and publishes no rate card.
Its published results show what the hiring slowdown did to a board that depends on small employers. In the April to June 2026 quarter, revenue was $118.1 million, up 5% from a year earlier. ZipRecruiter had 70,721 quarterly paid employers, up 7%. But revenue per paid employer fell 1% to $1,669203. So the recent growth came from winning customers, not from charging each one more. That is the opposite of Indeed's pattern in the same months.
Dice, a board for tech jobs, shows what a small US niche board can publish. As of November 2026, one job slot costs $399 for 30 days. Starter, with 3 job slots and 250 candidate profile views a month, costs $649 a month month-to-month or $549 a month on an annual contract. Standard, with 5 slots, two users and branded jobs, costs $899 or $749204. In our worked example, an employer that fills three roles a month pays about $216 per slot on Starter, against $399 for single slots. The discount rewards a steady flow of jobs.
CareerBuilder and Monster
The two oldest big US job boards show what happens when a fixed-price board loses traffic to free aggregators. CareerBuilder and Monster, which had merged the year before, filed for Chapter 11 in June 2025 and put their businesses up for sale228. Bold, a CV-builder company, won the job boards with a cash bid of $28.4 million. It beat the first bidder, JobGet, which had raised its offer to $27 million, and offered to keep at least 350 staff. Valnet won the media sites, including military.com, for nearly $27.3 million, and the government services unit went to PartnerOne229. In October 2025 the court approved a payout in which lenders and noteholders owed nearly $363 million shared about $33.6 million230.
A well-known name does not protect a board whose audience has moved elsewhere.
SEEK
SEEK is the best case study of yield-driven pricing. It does not publish one list price. The employer sees the price of an ad when it creates it. There are three main tiers. Basic gets standard exposure in search and recommendations. Advanced gets promoted exposure and up to 30 candidate invitations. Premium gets prioritized exposure, 80 invitations and unlimited AI pre-screening205. Advanced was added in the second half of FY2025, between Basic and Premium231. We could not verify a current Australian dollar price for any tier.
The results for the year to June 2026 show the effect. ANZ revenue reached A$945 million (change 7 above gives its growth and yield). Advanced and Premium ads grew from 15% to 27% of paid ads in a year. Ads above Basic brought in 42% of job ad revenue, up from 28%. Revenue from job ads and add-ons was A$845 million, up from A$753 million. The limit is volume. For FY2027, SEEK assumes ANZ ad volume will fall by a mid-single-digit percentage, with yield up about 10%, and each 1% of volume is worth about A$9 million of revenue5. Its shares fell 14% on the result and outlook231.
In Asia, SEEK runs Jobstreet and Jobsdb on the same platform. It finished a switch to freemium there, rolled out from the Philippines in May 2024 to Malaysia in February 2026. Total ads rose about 35% from before freemium. Within six months of a first free ad, 11% of hirers bought a paid ad. In FY2026, Asian paid ad volume fell 12%, yield rose 20% and revenue rose 3% to A$254 million5. The Hong Kong and Malaysian price pages now start with a Lite ad with limited exposure, below Basic206. Malaysia also sells SmartHire, with no upfront fee: the employer pays only when it hires207. We could not verify current Asian ad prices.
Totaljobs and Reed
The UK still has a busy market of fixed-price boards that compete on price per ad. As of November 2026, Totaljobs, owned by StepStone, lists its Pro ad at £220 for 30 days, or £69 for a new customer, a 69% discount. Its subscriptions keep ads online until the employer stops them212. Higher tiers are Pro Plus at £275 for 30 days and Pro Ultimate at £352 for 60 days, both with priority placement. A Pro Campus ad for graduates costs £49. Every ad also goes out to up to 450 partner job sites211.
Reed.co.uk has moved toward results-based pricing. Its Pay-Per-Application product is free to post. The employer pays a cost per application set by the job's details and caps the budget, and the ad stays live until the budget runs out. The fixed alternative is a Premium job credit, £89 plus VAT for new customers. It stays live for up to 6 weeks, is shown as a featured job and can be used any time within 12 months213. We could not open CV-Library's price page, so it is left out.
Both boards use a large first-ad discount. Totaljobs' new-customer price is less than a third of its list price. The aim is to get a small employer to try the board, then move it to a subscription.
StepStone and the Nordics
StepStone is the leading paid job board in Germany. As of November 2026, its German site lists single Pro Ads from €1,449 each for 30 days. New customers are steered to a subscription instead: All Jobs Starter costs €249 a month for one job that stays online until it is filled, or €349 for two, on a 12-month contract with three months' notice, billed yearly208. The page says each job is spread across 60,000 websites and social channels209. In our worked example, a year of All Jobs Starter costs €2,988, about the price of two single Pro ads. Austria is cheaper: Starter costs €649 for 30 days, Professional €849 and Premium €1,399 for 60 days, before VAT. A Campus ad for students and trainees costs €199210. StepStone does not publish its own results. Since April 2025 it has been an independent joint venture with KKR and CPP Investments as majority owners232. We could not open InfoJobs' employer price pages in Spain.
The Nordic boards publish full price lists. Jobindex in Denmark charges DKK 1,025 for a do-it-yourself job ad and DKK 3,085 for its standard profile ad over 4 weeks, before VAT. Match, at DKK 5,145, adds candidates found in its database. Employers can also search the CV database and pay DKK 3,085 only if they hire214. FINN jobb in Norway prices each ad by how hard the role is to fill. Category 1, which includes shop and restaurant jobs, costs NOK 10,400, and Category 4, with engineers, IT developers and sales managers, costs NOK 14,800, before VAT. Part-time ads cost 80% of the full-time price. Volume discounts start with the 11th ad in 365 days215.
In Poland, Pracuj.pl's price page did not open for us, but its owner reports price trends. In the first quarter of 2026, the average price per recruitment project rose 4%, and white-collar prices about 10%. Group revenue grew 2% to 209.4 million zł216.
Naukri (India)
Naukri shows how low a price per ad can go when volume is huge. It promotes free job posting for small firms and first-time employers, with paid posts from ₹400217.
Info Edge reports "billings", the value of contracts signed in a period, which leads revenue. In the April to June 2026 quarter, recruitment billings, mostly Naukri, rose 17.5% to ₹552.7 crore, about three-quarters of the company's standalone billings of ₹737 crore218. Operating revenue rose 11% to ₹880.7 crore and net profit rose 43% to ₹490.1 crore233.
hh.ru (Russia)
hh.ru is the leading job board in Russia. As of November 2026, it sells vacancies one by one, from ₽2,689 for one vacancy online for 30 days, with 10 CVs with open contacts as a bonus. The CV database is sold separately, and the employer pays for each contact it views219. There are three main vacancy types. Standard is the base. Standard plus has its date refreshed every three days, so it stays near the top of recent results. Premium holds the top places in search for 7 days220. A separate top-of-search placement ranks above Premium. Employers in the Omsk region can post for free and pay only to view applicants' contacts219.
The 2025 results are the clearest picture of a hiring slowdown in the data. Revenue grew 4% to ₽41.2 billion234, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of 55.2%235. Press reports gave two different drops in paying customers, 15% and 16.2%. The company's release shows both are right for different periods. Over the full year, paying customers fell 15.0% to 529,838, and small and mid-sized ones fell 18.4% to 448,344. In the fourth quarter alone, they fell 16.2% to 243,150. Average revenue per customer went up. It was ₽907,006 for large clients (+6.6%) and ₽41,091 for small and mid-sized ones (+13.3%)221. Analysts point out that much of the small-business rise came from low-spending customers leaving, which lifts the average for those who stay236. HeadHunter guides to revenue growth of up to 8% in 2026235.
BOSS Zhipin and OCC Mundial
BOSS Zhipin, which calls itself a leading online recruitment platform in China, does not publish a price list we could open, but its results show how far a chat-based, mostly self-serve model can reach. In the twelve months to June 2026 it had 7.2 million paid enterprise customers, up 10.8%. In the April to June 2026 quarter, revenue was RMB 2,398.6 million, up 14.1%. RMB 2,384.0 million of that came from recruitment services to employers, and the growth was mainly driven by more paying customers222. With millions of paying employers and quarterly revenue in the low billions of yuan, the average ticket per employer is small and the business runs on scale.
OCC Mundial in Mexico publishes a classic three-tier price list. As of November 2026, a Clásica vacancy costs MX$1,599 plus IVA (sales tax), Destacada MX$1,949 and Premium MX$2,419, each online for 60 days. Employers planning more than 10 vacancies a year are sent to the sales team223.
Craigslist
General classifieds sites remain a cheap way to hire locally, especially for hourly jobs. Craigslist charges $10 to $75 to post in its job categories in the US and parts of Canada, with the fee set by area (see General classifieds above)8. There are no upgrades. High-volume posters can get paid posting accounts. Many other general classifieds sites, covered in General classifieds above, keep jobs free for private posters and charge recruiters or agencies, because a job ad is one of the few listings that clearly comes from a business.
Worked example: a waiter
This is our worked example, using the prices above as of November 2026. It leaves out tax and the employer's own time.
A café in Sydney posts one waiter job on SEEK as a Basic ad. SEEK shows the price when the ad is created, and we could not verify a current figure205. If it upgrades to Advanced for more applicants, it pays more. It can post the same job on Indeed for free and sponsor it only if applications are slow, at a budget Indeed recommends197.
A pub in London posting on Totaljobs for the first time pays £69 for a 30-day Pro ad. A second job at list price costs £220212. On Reed.co.uk, it can post for free on Pay-Per-Application and pay only for applications, or buy a Premium credit for £89 plus VAT as a new customer213.
A restaurant in Austin has the cheapest options. It can pay a Craigslist fee somewhere between $10 and $75, depending on the area's rate8. It can keep one free job open on LinkedIn200. If it sets a sponsorship budget of $15 a day for two weeks on Indeed, it caps its spend at $210, our own budget figure rather than an Indeed price.
The gap matters. US employers can often hire hourly staff without paying a fixed ad fee at all, while a UK employer pays a fixed fee per ad after the first one.
Worked example: a salesperson
Our second worked example, also as of November 2026: a small firm hiring one sales executive. In Moscow, one hh.ru vacancy starts at ₽2,689 for 30 days219. In Oslo, a sales manager ad falls in FINN's Category 4 and costs NOK 14,800 before VAT215. In Copenhagen, a Jobindex profile ad costs DKK 3,085 for 4 weeks214. hh.ru keeps the price of one ad low; its large clients pay far more over a year (see hh.ru above). FINN charges a high price per ad and raises it for roles that are hard to fill.
Lessons for smaller sites
- Charge for results or reach, not for the listing itself. Indeed lets employers post for free, sells sponsored reach by the click or started application, and still raised US revenue per job posting 17% in the year to March 20266.
- Add a middle tier. After SEEK added its Advanced ad, upgraded ads grew from 15% to 27% of paid ads in a year, and ANZ revenue rose 12% while volume fell 1%5.
- Price by how hard the role is to fill. FINN charges NOK 10,400 for shop and restaurant jobs and NOK 14,800 for engineers and IT developers215.
- Use a deep first-ad discount to win small employers. Totaljobs sells a new customer's first ad for £69 against a £220 list price212.
- Sell the CV database and yearly contracts, not just ads. hh.ru's large clients pay about ₽907,000 a year each, more than 20 times a small client221.
- A free tier can feed the paid one. After SEEK made its Asian sites freemium, total ads rose about 35%, and 11% of hirers bought a paid ad within six months of their first free one5.
- Expect small employers to leave first in a slowdown. hh.ru's paying customers fell 15% in 2025, and small and mid-sized ones fell 18.4%221.
- A famous brand is not a business model. CareerBuilder and Monster's job boards sold for $28.4 million in bankruptcy229.
Niche marketplaces and services
A classifieds site lets buyer and seller settle the deal between themselves. A transactional marketplace takes part in the deal: it holds the money, offers buyer protection or a guarantee, and takes a cut. On the niche marketplaces in this section the take rate ranges from nothing at all for a private seller on eBay UK to about a third of the sale at The RealReal, which inspects, stores and ships every item itself.
The biggest change of 2024-2026 is who pays. In second-hand fashion, the fee has moved from the seller to the buyer. Vinted never charged sellers (change 2 above). eBay made selling free for private sellers in the UK237 and in Germany238. Short-stay rentals moved the other way. Airbnb is moving every home host from a split fee to a single fee paid by the host239.
Services follow two models. Freelance platforms (Upwork, Fiverr, Malt) take a commission on each job, and some charge both sides. Home-service platforms (Thumbtack, Angi, Bark, Checkatrade) mostly sell leads or memberships to the professional, because the customer often pays the pro directly. We checked prices in November 2026 unless a cell says otherwise. Many fee pages block automated visits; where we could not confirm a fee from the platform or reliable press, we left it out.

Resale
For most of the last decade, second-hand apps such as Poshmark charged the seller. Then Vinted showed that a free-to-sell app can grow faster, with the buyer paying a small fee at checkout instead (change 2 above).
Rivals copied the model. eBay stopped charging private sellers in the UK and Germany, where it competes with Vinted and Kleinanzeigen238. Not every attempt worked, as Poshmark and Mercari US found (change 2 above).
The shift does not mean the platforms earn less. They earn the same or more, but from a different person. A buyer fee is charged on every order, often with a fixed part, so it weighs most on cheap items. A £5 T-shirt on Vinted UK carries a fixed charge of £0.30 to £0.80 plus a percentage, which can add more than 10% to the price240. Shipping is the other source of money. The buyer pays for a label that the platform buys in bulk. Wallapop's shipping fees are in General classifieds above.
Vinted
Vinted is the clearest example of the buyer-pays model. Sellers pay no commission, whether they sell one item or a hundred. The buyer pays a fee on each order, plus shipping. In the UK the fee is usually 3% to 8% of the item or bundle price plus a fixed £0.30 to £0.80, as of November 2026. The exact figure depends on the item, the order value and whether it is a bundle, and it includes VAT240. Bundles matter: the fee is worked out on the bundle, not on each item, which nudges people to buy more from the same seller.
The fee used to be called "Buyer Protection". In terms that took effect on October 8, 2026, Vinted renamed it the "Vinted fee" in the US, UK and Australia248. In Europe, an update on October 5 renamed the fee too, and moved users with a Vinted Balance from the payment firm Mangopay to Vinted's own Vinted Pay249.
Vinted's net profit was €62 million in 2025, down 19%, as it spent on Germany, new categories, logistics and payments3. Its take rate near 10% (see the group table in the first section) is low for a marketplace, but it comes with very high volume.
Depop and Poshmark
eBay paid $1.4 billion in cash to buy Depop from Etsy. The deal closed on July 30, 2026, and eBay's GMV grew 15% in the third quarter of 2026250. Depop sold about $1 billion of goods in 2025251.
Poshmark, owned by South Korea's Naver, kept the old seller-pays model. A seller pays a flat $2.95 on sales of $15 and under and 20% on sales over $15. Its terms also say it may change or drop fees without notice241. At 20%, Poshmark is the most expensive of the big US fashion apps for a private seller.
Mercari and eBay
Mercari US has changed its fees more often than any rival (change 2 above). Since January 6, 2025, the seller pays a flat 10% of the item price and of any shipping the buyer pays, and the buyer pays a flat 3.6% Buyer Protection fee, with no separate processing fee242. So Mercari US now charges both sides, while Vinted charges mainly the buyer.
In Japan, where Mercari is the leading resale app, the model is simpler: the seller pays a 10% selling fee and ¥200 for each bank transfer60. Its marketplace GMV grew about 15% to ¥1,285.6 billion in the year to June 2026252.
eBay runs three different price lists. In the US, a seller gets 250 free listings a month and then pays $0.35 a listing. When the item sells, the seller pays a final value fee of 13.6% in most categories, on sales up to $7,500, plus $0.30 per order ($10 or less) or $0.40243. In the UK, private sellers pay no final value fee except on vehicles, and get 300 free listings a month237. In Germany, private selling within the country is free238. Business sellers there pay 11% to 14% in most categories, for example 12% on clothing and 14% on office supplies, plus €0.35 to €0.45 per order, excluding VAT19. Free private selling in Europe is how eBay fights Vinted for supply, while business sellers and US sellers pay for it.
Etsy
Etsy's headline fees look modest. A seller pays $0.20 to list an item and a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total, including shipping and gift wrap. Payment processing comes on top and varies by country34.
The real cost comes from advertising. Etsy Ads, inside Etsy's own search, are sold per click, and they are why the group's take rate (Etsy, Depop and, until June 2025, Reverb) keeps rising while its headline fees stay the same (change 9 above). In 2025 its total GMS (gross merchandise sales) fell 5.3% to $11.9 billion. Etsy marketplace GMS, $10.46 billion, also declined. Etsy's advertising revenue rose $62.2 million, mostly because the average price per click on Etsy Ads went up58. In other words, Etsy earned more from each sale on a smaller volume of sales.
Worked example: a $50 sale
Our worked example: a private seller sells a $50 item, and to keep the sums simple the buyer pays shipping separately and the seller charges none. Fees are as of November 2026.
- Etsy (US): $0.20 listing + $3.25 transaction fee = $3.45, or 6.9%, before payment processing, which varies by country34.
- eBay (US): 13.6% final value fee ($6.80) + $0.40 per order = $7.20, or 14.4%243.
- Poshmark (US): 20% = $10.00241.
- Mercari (US): 10% = $5.00. The buyer also pays $1.80 (3.6%)242.
- eBay (UK) or Vinted (UK), £50 item: the seller pays £0. On Vinted, the buyer pays roughly £1.80 to £4.80 on top240.
For the same item, the seller's fee ranges from nothing to a fifth of the price. The platforms that charge sellers least make up for it with buyer fees.
Our worked example with each site's published US fees, before payment processing where it is separate. On eBay UK and Vinted UK the private seller pays nothing and the buyer pays a fee. Sources are in the text.

| Marketplace | Seller pays | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Poshmark | $10.00 | 20% commission |
| eBay (US) | $7.20 | 13.6% + $0.40 per order |
| Mercari (US) | $5.00 | 10%; the buyer also pays 3.6% |
| Etsy | $3.45 | $0.20 listing + 6.5%, before payment processing |
| eBay UK, Vinted | $0 | Private sellers pay nothing; the buyer pays a fee |
Luxury resale
Luxury resale charges far more, because the platform authenticates each item. The RealReal sells on consignment: the owner sends in a bag or watch, and The RealReal checks, photographs, prices, stores and ships it, then pays the owner a share once it sells. In 2025 its GMV passed $2.13 billion and its revenue was $693 million, so it kept about 32.5% of each dollar sold (our calculation). It expects GMV of $2.39 to $2.45 billion in 2026244.
Vestiaire Collective, based in Paris, is a peer-to-peer marketplace with optional authentication. It had about €200 million of revenue on just under €1 billion of GMV in 2024, or roughly 20% (our calculation). It is reported to be heading for its first annual profit in 2026253.
ThredUp, which takes in mostly mid-price clothes and sells them itself, grew revenue 20% to $310.8 million in 2025254. The lesson is that a take rate of 20% to 33% is possible only when the platform does real work on each item. Without that work, sellers move to cheaper apps.
Collectibles and live shopping
Catawiki, the Dutch online auction house for art, watches, coins and collectibles, charges both sides. The seller pays 12.5% of the sale price, excluding VAT, and the buyer pays a buyer protection fee of 9% plus €3245. Our worked example: on a €1,000 watch, the buyer pays €93 and the seller pays €125, so Catawiki keeps €218, or about 22% of the hammer price.
Live shopping grows fastest. Whatnot reported more than $8 billion of live GMV in 2025, more than double its $3 billion in 2024255. Car auctions such as Bring a Trailer are covered in Car sites above.
Freelance
Freelance platforms charge the worker, often the client too, and in 2025 they found ways to charge more per job.
Upwork's marketplace take rate rose to 19% in the fourth quarter of 2025 from 18.1% a year earlier, on just over $4 billion of gross services volume (what clients spent) for the year256.
Fiverr's marketplace take rate was 27.7% in the fourth quarter of 2025, the highest of the big freelance sites257. Its active buyers fell 13.6% to 3.1 million in 2025258.
We could not confirm current freelancer fee rates for Upwork, Fiverr or Malt from the platforms or reliable press. Contra advertises commission-free payments for freelancers259.
Home services
Home services sell access to the customer, not a share of the job. A plumber is often paid directly, after a quote on site, so the platform cannot see or take the payment.
We found no lead or membership prices for Thumbtack, Angi, Bark, Checkatrade or MyBuilder from the platforms or reliable press, so we give none. In May 2026 Checkatrade launched Checkatrade Express, an online booking service with instant prices for small jobs260.
Taskrabbit is the exception: it books the job and takes the payment. The client pays the Tasker's hourly rate plus a Taskrabbit Service Fee, a percentage of the task price, and a Trust & Support fee. Taskrabbit does not publish the percentages. Taskers receive 100% of tips and expenses, and in California and Massachusetts the invoice shows a single Service Fee246.
Pet care and beauty
Rover, the pet-sitting marketplace, has been private since Blackstone bought it for $2.3 billion; the deal closed in February 2024261. IAC agreed in March 2026 to sell Care.com, the babysitting and elder-care marketplace, to Pacific Avenue Capital Partners for about $320 million262.
Beauty booking shows another model: charge only for new customers. Fresha charges a one-time 20% fee on a new marketplace client, with a minimum of $6 in the US, and nothing on returning clients. Its booking software costs $19.95 a month for an independent professional, or $14.95 a month per bookable team member247.
Our worked example: a new client books a $60 cut through Fresha's marketplace. The salon pays $12. The second visit costs nothing.
Stays
Short-term rental platforms are moving all fees onto the host. Under Airbnb's split fee, most hosts pay 3% (4% in Brazil and Mexico) and the guest pays a service fee of 14.1% to 16.5% at checkout. Under the single fee, the whole fee comes out of the host's payout: most hosts pay 15.5%, others 14% to 16%, and listings in Brazil and Mexico 16%. The single fee is mandatory for most hosts, including hotels and hosts who use property management software. Airbnb says it is moving all home hosts to it and will then retire the split fee239.
Airbnb's revenue was about 13.4% of its $91.3 billion gross booking value in 2025 (our calculation from $12.2 billion of revenue)263.
Booking.com does not publish a single host commission on a page we could open. Booking Holdings' revenue was about 14.5% of its $186.1 billion of gross bookings in 2025 (our calculation from $26.9 billion of revenue)264.
Our worked example: a $1,000 week. The host pays $155 on Airbnb's single fee.
Lessons for smaller sites
- Let private sellers sell for free and charge the buyer a small fee. Vinted charges sellers nothing and still keeps about 10% of GMV (our calculation), with GMV up 47% in 20253.
- Test a fee change on a small group first and be ready to reverse it. Poshmark withdrew its split buyer-seller fee about two weeks after launch in October 2024, after sales fell18.
- Charge more only where you do real work. The RealReal keeps about 32.5% of GMV (our calculation) because it inspects, stores and ships each item244.
- Charge only for new customers so users have no reason to leave. Fresha takes 20% of a new marketplace client's first booking and nothing on returning clients247.
What to charge on your own site
The sites in this report are big, and most of them have no strong rival, which lets them raise prices every year. A new or small site is in the opposite position: it has to win users before it can charge them. The prices above still show what works, and in what order. These are the main lessons, with the evidence from the parts above.
1. Keep the first ad free for private users, and cap it instead of pricing it. Almost every leader lets a private seller post a normal ad for free. Where they charge, they charge above a limit: Kleinanzeigen lets a private seller post two car ads free in any 30 days for cars under €30,000 and charges €9.99 for the next one9. A cap keeps casual users free and makes the people who use the site as a shop pay.
2. Charge the businesses. Dealers, agents, employers and shops earn money from your buyers, so they are the ones who pay. Private sellers paid Auto Trader under 4% of its revenue2, and Rightmove takes no private ads at all and still earns £1,621 a month per advertiser1. Craigslist, which is free for almost everyone, charges only where the poster is a business: jobs, dealer cars and a few other categories8. On a new site, a simple monthly plan for businesses, with a free trial or a free first month, is usually the first thing worth selling.
3. Sell visibility next. Bumps, top ads and highlights are the paid extra that private sellers actually buy, because they are cheap and tied to one sale. Price them against what is at stake: a week at the top costs €29.95 on Fotocasa for a home161, far more than a bump on a general site. The parts above list what each site charges for its visibility products.
4. Add a middle tier before you raise the base price. SEEK added an "Advanced" ad between its standard and premium ones, and upgraded ads grew from 15% to 27% of paid ads in a year while its revenue in Australia and New Zealand rose 12% on 1% fewer ads5. REA grew its residential revenue 12% on flat listings the same way, by selling more of its top listing product22.
5. If you handle the payment, charge the buyer and tie the fee to protection. Vinted charges sellers nothing and earns from a buyer fee for protection240, and Trade Me replaced its seller success fee with a buyer fee in 20264. Buyers accept a fee that protects their money; sellers resent a commission on a sale they made themselves. Do not expect it to pay quickly, though: Vend's second-hand unit made more than twice as much from transactions as from listings in the third quarter of 2026 and still lost money109.
6. Raise prices slowly, and test them. The leaders raise business prices most years, but they add a product each time and they have no close rival. When a rival exists, prices meet a limit: Hemnet's revenue per paid listing rose while its paid listings fell almost 30%163, and Domain, under its new owner, capped its yearly rises at 4%24. Test a new fee on one category or region first, and be ready to take it back, as Poshmark did with its buyer fee in 2024 (see Niche marketplaces and services above).
7. Show the full price. Regulators now look at fees that appear only at checkout: since April 2025 UK law bans adding compulsory charges during checkout, which covers a buyer fee every buyer must pay (see change 10 above). Put every fee on one public price page, as Craigslist and Bazoš do, and show it before the user pays.
If you run a classifieds or marketplace site on Yclas, the software we make, you can charge for any of these: paid listings by category, featured and top ads, business plans and memberships, and commissions on sales through the site's payments. Our guides on listing fees, lead fees and featured listings and on transaction fees go into each model.
Questions people ask about classifieds pricing in 2026
How do free classifieds sites make money? Mostly from businesses and from paid visibility. Private sellers post for free, while dealers, agents, employers and shops pay for subscriptions, packages or individual ads, and private sellers pay small amounts to bump or highlight their ads. More and more general sites also earn from buyers, through a fee for payment protection and shipping on items paid for through the site. Display advertising is a smaller part of the revenue at most of the leaders.
How much do car dealers pay to list on Auto Trader, CarGurus and Cars.com? Auto Trader's average UK retailer paid £2,995 a month in the year to March 202626. CarGurus earned $7,938 a quarter from each paying US dealer in the fourth quarter of 202528, and Cars.com $2,472 a month29. These are averages; each site sells packages at several prices.
How much does Rightmove charge estate agents? Rightmove does not publish a price list. Its average revenue per advertiser was £1,621 a month in 2025, up 6%1. Individual branches pay more or less depending on their package and the extra products they buy.
Does Vinted charge sellers? No. On Vinted the seller pays nothing, and the buyer pays a fee for buyer protection, in the UK usually 3% to 8% of the price plus £0.30 to £0.80240.
What should a new classifieds site charge? Start with free ads for private users, with a limit per month or per category. Charge businesses a simple monthly plan or a price per ad, and sell cheap visibility extras such as bumps and featured ads. Add buyer fees only if you handle the payment and stand behind the sale. Publish every price on one page.
