How to create a classifieds website people actually use.
How to create a classifieds website in seven decisions: the niche, the categories and fields, how it makes money, where the first 100 listings come from, how you keep it clean, how people find it, and the launch. The software is the easy part; this guide is about the rest.

To create a classifieds website, start with a niche small enough to own.
A new classifieds site cannot beat the big general sites on volume. It wins by being the best place for one thing in one area: used farm machinery in one state, horses in one region, second-hand bikes in one city, rooms near one university.
Three tests for a niche
- People already trade it somewhere awkward: a Facebook group, a forum thread, a notice board, a WhatsApp chat. That proves demand and tells you where your first sellers are.
- Buyers filter on something specific: engine hours, hull length, bedrooms, frame size. If a general site cannot filter on it, you have a reason to exist.
- You can reach the sellers: you know the dealers, the clubs, the shows or the groups.
Start narrow and widen later. Adding categories to a busy site is easy; filling an empty general site is not.
Plan categories and fields around how buyers search.
Categories answer "what is it"; fields answer "which one". Keep categories shallow (two levels is plenty) and put the detail in fields that buyers can filter on. Every field you add makes posting slower, so only ask what buyers really use to decide.
| Site | Categories | Fields buyers filter on |
|---|---|---|
| Used cars | Cars, vans, motorbikes, parts | Make, model, year, mileage, fuel, gearbox |
| Rooms and flats | Rooms, flats, houses, short lets | Rent, bedrooms, bills included, available from |
| Local buy and sell | Furniture, electronics, kids, garden | Condition, price, delivery or collection |
| Machinery | Tractors, diggers, attachments | Make, year, hours, horsepower, sale or hire |
In Yclas, fields can be text, numbers, dropdowns, checkboxes or dates, each one required or optional and shown as a search filter. Field packs set up cars, property and equipment in one click.

Pick a money model you can switch on later.
Charging on day one is the most common way to stall a new classifieds website. Sellers will not pay to reach an audience that does not exist yet. Decide your model now, tell people it is free while you grow, and switch on paid extras when listings and visitors arrive.
| Model | Works when | Switch it on |
|---|---|---|
| Featured listings and bumps | There is enough traffic for visibility to matter | A few hundred active listings |
| Pay to post in some categories | A listing is worth a lot to the seller: cars, property, machinery | When those categories have buyers |
| Memberships for dealers | Businesses post many listings a month | Once two or three dealers post regularly |
| Banner spaces | Local businesses want your audience | When you can show visitor numbers |
| Commission on sales | Items are bought and paid for on the site | Marketplace plan, with checkout |
Get your first 100 listings before you advertise.
An empty site loses every visitor it gets. Fill it first, then send people to it.
- Ask sellers directly. Message the people already selling in the groups you found in step 1 and offer to post for them.
- Bring dealers in with their stock. One dealer with 40 vehicles or machines fills a category in an afternoon. Import their spreadsheet for them.
- Post your own. Things you, friends or your business want to sell are real listings.
- Make posting quick. On Yclas a seller can take a photo and let AI fill in the title, description, category and price for them to check.
Do not fill the site with fake listings. Buyers who message a seller who does not exist do not come back.

Decide how listings go live and how spam stays out.
Every classifieds site attracts spam and scams, usually within weeks of being found. Decide your rules before that happens.
Moderation choices
- Approve every listing while the site is small. It takes minutes a day and you see what people post.
- Publish straight away once trusted sellers are the majority, with banned words, reCAPTCHA and reports as a safety net.
- Let AI hold suspicious listings for review, so you only read the doubtful ones.
Write two pages early: your posting rules and a short safety guide for buyers. Link both from every listing.

Make every category and listing a page Google can rank.
Search is where most classifieds traffic comes from in the long run. Each listing, category and location should have its own clean address, a title with the words people search ("used tractors for sale in Iowa"), and a short description.
- Set title patterns once, so every new listing gets a good title by itself.
- Keep sold listings online for a while marked as sold, or redirect them, instead of leaving broken links.
- Write a few useful pages for your niche: a buying guide, a price guide, a checklist. They earn links that lists of ads never will.

Launch to one group, then the next.
Launch where your sellers and buyers already are: the group, the club, the dealer network. A short message with a link to a full category works better than a general announcement. Then repeat with the next group.
Launch checklist
- Your own domain connected, with SSL.
- Logo, colours and a home page headline that says what the site is for, and where.
- At least 100 real listings, spread over the main categories.
- Posting rules, a safety guide, terms and a privacy policy.
- Email notifications tested: new message, listing approved, listing expiring.
- Payments connected if you charge, tested with a real small payment.

How do I create a classifieds website for free?
Free scripts such as Osclass cost nothing to download, but you still pay for hosting, a domain and often paid plugins, and you do the server work. Yclas has a 15-day free trial with no credit card, then a monthly plan with hosting included.
How long does it take to build a classifieds website?
Setting up the site takes an afternoon on a hosted platform, or days to weeks with a script on your own server. Getting the first 100 real listings usually takes longer than the build.
What do I need to start a classifieds website?
A niche, a list of categories and fields, a domain name, a way to take payments if you charge, and a plan for your first sellers. The software is the smallest part.
Should I charge for listings from day one?
Usually not. Keep posting free while the site grows and add featured listings, bumps or paid categories once there is traffic worth paying for.
How do I get listings on a new classifieds site?
Go where sellers already trade, post for them, bring dealers in with their whole stock by spreadsheet import, and make posting from a phone quick.
How do I stop spam on a classifieds website?
Approve listings by hand while you are small, use banned words, reCAPTCHA and reports, and let AI hold suspicious listings for review as you grow.
Can I build a classifieds website without coding?
Yes. On Yclas the wizard, the templates and the visual editor cover the whole site; you never need to touch code.
