Statista's Research Department projected that revenue from digital ad spending will increase from $521.02 billion in 2021 to $876.1 in 2026.
In Australia, the classified advertising industry in Australia was worth an estimated $1.9 billion annually, with the majority of revenue coming from online classified ads.
The country's ad spending in the classified segment is expected to make $652.40 million in 2022.
Many classified websites are available in Australia, each with its focus and target audience.
In this article, we have rounded up the top ten classified websites in Australia based on traffic and popularity.
How Australia's classifieds market has changed since 2023
Before the list, a quick update. Since this article was first published in May 2023, Australian classifieds have consolidated around a few large players, and several smaller free sites have disappeared.
One company now owns Gumtree, CarsGuide and Autotrader
eBay owned Gumtree Australia until 2021, when it sold it to Adevinta together with CarsGuide and Autotrader. In 2022 Adevinta sold all three to The Market Herald (Wikipedia). That company later traded as The Market Limited. According to its ASX announcement of 31 January 2025, it has traded as Gumtree Australia Markets Limited (ASX: GUM) since about 3 February 2025. StockAnalysis describes Autotrader as its marketplace connecting car dealers with shoppers, and CarsGuide as its automotive editorial platform.
Traffic is concentrated at the top
In Similarweb's September 2026 rankings for the Classifieds category in Australia, Gumtree is #1 (#91 of all websites in Australia) and Locanto is #2 (#115 overall). Tradingpost is down to #9 in the category and #7,708 overall. Three sites in this top 10 are gone. When we checked in October 2026, Adeex Australia redirected to a parked-domain page, aufreeads.com no longer worked as a classifieds site, and icracker.com.au no longer resolved.

Stay safe when buying and selling
Scams are the main risk on any open marketplace. PACK & SEND analysed 2024 Scamwatch data and, as reported by eCommerceNews on 20 May 2025, found more than 10,000 online shopping scam reports with losses above A$2.5 million, an average of about A$250 per victim. Social media and forums were the most common contact method (26.8%), ahead of email (23.8%). The company also said scammers had impersonated it on Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree. Fake courier and 'pay for shipping' messages are a common trick.
- Keep the conversation on the platform's own messaging until you meet in person.
- Inspect an item before you pay, and be wary of anyone who insists on a bank transfer or gift cards.
- Be careful with buyers who offer to send a courier and ask you to click a payment link.
- Check that a site is still live and active before you post. Several of the 2023 favourites below are not.
1. Gumtree Online Classifed Ads
Launched in 2007, Gumtree is one of Australia's most popular online classified websites.
It is a great place to buy, sell, or find anything from cars, textbooks, electronic goods, and furniture to jobs and services.
Gumtree boasts more than 3 million listings covering hundreds of categories and an average of 7 million unique visitors to their website each month.
Their top-selling items include boats, mountain bikes, ride-on mowers, caravans, surfboards, kayaks, dining tables, and more.
2. Locanto Online Classified Ads
Locanto was founded in 2006 by the German company Yalwa and has since made its way to over 60 countries worldwide, intending to be a one-stop shop within the community.
The website's annual revenue is from $10 million to $15 million, with over 500 thousand listings across categories like real estate, jobs, dating, classes, services, and more.
The platform is free to use but offers options for users to avail themselves of paid posting plans, which increases the likelihood of their listings being seen.
3. Craigslist Australia
Founded in 1995, Craigslist is perhaps the world's oldest classified ads website.
In 2021, they landed in second place as the world's most visited classified website, next to Avito, which claimed the top spot.
4. Adeex Australia
Founded in October of 2005, Adeex is a classified ads website that offers a wide range of listings for items and services in Australia.
Adeex offers various categories, including jobs, real estate, vehicles, pets, and more. You can also find listings for services, such as home improvement, legal services, and more.
5. Australia Free Classified Ads
AUFreeAds.com was established in 2006 by California-based company USNetAds LLC.
The website offers free online classifieds without the need to signup or register for an account.
Australia Free Classified Ads feature categories such as automobiles, business opportunities, health and beauty, computers, real estate, pets and animals, and garage sales, among other things.
6. Icracker Online Classified Ads
Icracker is one of the leading contenders regarding classified websites in Australia.
The website has a clean and user-friendly interface that lets you narrow your search to your local area.
Icracker's categories range from antiques to clothing to ticket and hire services.
It's free to post listings on icracker.com.au, and they get around 1,400 unique daily visitors.
7. Tradingpost Classifieds
Founded in 1966, Tradingpost has been in the classified business for over fifty years.
The company started as a weekly newspaper and is Australia's first buy-and-sell marketplace.
The website's annual revenue is $2 million to $5 million and gets around 458,000 visitors monthly.
It is free to sell on Tradingpost.
8. Adpost Australia
Adpost is a worldwide classified ad listing website, much like Craigslist.
They offer free and premium classifieds for over 1000 cities and 500 regions around the globe.
Adpost allows users to include a video in their listings and text and email ads for their premium account.
9. The West Classifieds
The West Classifieds is a classified website featured daily in The West Australian newspaper.
They boast a total audience count of around two million per month from different platforms and cover everything from birth and death announcements to employment, real estate, and other services.
The West Classifieds is part of Seven West Media, one of Australia's most recognized media companies.
10. Kugli Australian Classifieds
Kugli.com is another global classified website with a successful Australian branch.
The platform is most prolific in India, but they have visitors from all over the globe.
A registered account is required to post a listing on this website, and they have several categories ranging from cars to jobs, pets, and real estate.
