Craigslist, the best known of the group, is also less free than it used to be. Its posting-fee page now lists $5 to post cars, trucks, RVs or motorcycles even when you sell them yourself, $5 for services, $3–10 for gigs, $10–75 for jobs, and $5 for apartment rentals in Boston, Chicago and New York City. Ordinary for-sale items from private sellers remain free.
Scams have grown faster than the free sites have
The FTC told Congress in March 2026 that Americans reported losing $15.9 billion to fraud in 2025 across 3 million reports, up from just over $12 billion in 2024. In April 2026 it added that scams that started on social media cost people $2.1 billion in 2025. More than 40% of the people who lost money that way had ordered something they saw advertised, and Facebook was the platform where people reported losing the most money.
A safety checklist for buyers and sellers
- Never accept an overpayment. If a "buyer" sends a check for more than your price and asks for the difference back, it is a scam. The FTC explains that the bank may make the money available within days, but it can take weeks to find out the check was fake.
- Never share a verification code. A buyer who asks you to read back a code "to prove you're real" is usually setting up a Google Voice number linked to your phone number.
- Meet in person and pay on the spot for local deals. Choose a busy public place, and inspect the item before any money changes hands.
- Be wary of anything you can't inspect before you pay, such as pets, rentals you can't view, or event tickets.
- Prefer sites with moderation. A site that reviews ads and lets you report a listing is safer than a no-registration site nobody maintains.
