How to start a directory website that people come back to.
How to start a directory website, in seven steps: choose a niche narrow enough to win, gather the data before launch, pick software, design the business page, launch, get owners involved and start earning. With the real costs and the ways a directory makes money.

Pick a niche you can cover completely.
A directory wins when it is the most complete list of one thing in one place. "Every business in America" loses to Google. "Every dog groomer in Leeds, with prices" can win, because nobody else lists them all with the details people want.
Three tests for a niche
- People search for it with a place name: "wedding venues near Asheville", "vegan restaurants Lisbon".
- The details matter before contact: prices, hours, licences, wheelchair access.
- Businesses would pay for a customer. Trades, weddings and health pay; free community lists rarely do.
Start with one city or one trade. You can add the next town once the first is full.
Gather the listings before anyone sees the site.
Nobody browses an empty directory, and no business claims a page on a site with no visitors. Fill it first.
- Public sources: trade associations, council lists, your own research. Check each entry is still trading.
- Google Places: Yclas imports up to 60 businesses per search with your own Google key, without photos.
- A spreadsheet you build by hand, imported as a CSV.
Aim for at least 30 to 50 good pages in each category you launch with. Write a short, original description for the most important ones; copied text helps nobody.

Choose how the directory website runs.
There are three common routes. Each can work; they ask different things of you.
| Route | What you do | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress and a directory plugin | Hosting, theme, plugin, add-ons for reviews and payments, and their updates | People who already run WordPress sites |
| A self-hosted directory script | A server, the install, security fixes and backups | Teams with a developer |
| A hosted directory builder such as Yclas | Settings and content only; hosting and updates are included | Owners who want to spend their time on the directory |
We make Yclas, so weigh this table with that in mind. Our comparison of directory software lists the others fairly.
Best directory software, compared →Design the business page around one decision.
A visitor on a business page is deciding whether to call. Give them what they need for that, in this order:
- Open now or closed, and the hours for the week.
- Rating and a few recent reviews, with the business's replies.
- The facts of your niche: price list, areas covered, parking, languages.
- One clear action: call, message, directions or request a quote.
Decide the fields now, because they become your search filters too.

Launch to one audience, then widen.
Launch where your niche already gathers: a local Facebook group, a trade association newsletter, a wedding fair. Then work on search:
- A page per category and per town, each with its own title. "Plumbers in Fort Collins" is a page people search for.
- LocalBusiness structured data on every business page, so search engines read the address and hours.
- A short guide per category on the blog, such as "What a boiler service should cost".
Get the businesses to claim their pages.
Claimed pages stay current and their owners share them. Email each business a link to its page with a single request: check your details. In Yclas a business claims with a code sent to an email at its own website's domain, then edits its hours, photos and branches.
Give them a reason to come back: review invitations they can send to customers, a QR poster for the counter, a review badge for their own website, and a page showing the calls and clicks you sent them.

Make money with a directory, in this order.
Charge once businesses see visitors from you, not before. The usual order:
| Income | How it works | When to start |
|---|---|---|
| Featured listings | A badge and a higher place in results | Once categories have steady visits |
| Sponsored places | Two or three spots above a category, sold by the week | When a category has competition |
| Paid leads | Businesses pay to see a quote request's contact details | In trades and services |
| Banner space | Local advertisers book a zone by the week | At a few thousand visits a month |
| Memberships | Monthly plans for businesses, on Professional | When businesses want several extras |
What a directory website costs in year one.
The software is rarely the biggest line. Your time on data and on talking to businesses is.
| Cost line | Typical range | On Yclas |
|---|---|---|
| Domain | $10 to $20 a year | Your own; SSL included |
| Software and hosting | $0 to $100+ a month, plus plugins | Starter from $19 a month, Professional $99 |
| Theme or design | $0 to $100, or a designer | 109 looks included |
| Google Places data | A few cents per page of 20 results | Paid to Google, with your key |
| Payment fees | About 3% per payment | Your Stripe or PayPal fees; Yclas takes nothing |
| Your time | 5 to 10 hours a week at the start | Data, owner emails, moderation |
Ranges are typical market prices in 2026, not quotes.

How do I start a directory website with no money?
Use free data you collect yourself and a free trial to build it. On Yclas the trial is 15 days with no card; after that Starter is $19 a month.
How much does it cost to start a directory website?
Expect a domain at about $15 a year, software from $19 a month, and Google data fees of a few dollars if you import from Places. Your time is the main cost.
Can you make money with a directory?
Yes, once it sends businesses customers: featured listings, sponsored places, paid leads, banners and memberships are the usual ways. Most directories keep the basic listing free.
How many listings do I need to launch?
Enough that each category you launch looks complete for its area. 30 to 50 per category is a reasonable start.
Is it legal to import business data?
Public facts like a name, address and phone are generally fine to list. Google Places data must follow Google's terms, which is why Yclas imports no photos. Check the rules where you operate.
Do I need a developer?
No, for a hosted builder. Yclas also has a custom design and development service if you want one.
How long until a directory gets traffic?
Search traffic usually takes months. Launch to an existing community first, so the first visitors and reviews arrive while search catches up.
